Erin relaxed. So Hailey had been right. Still, this was beyond anything she would have expected. She’d wet the bed, forcing Hailey to clean her up and Aunt Sue to do her laundry, and not only were either of them mad at her, they were being nice? Yet again, words failed her.

“Come on,” Sue said, “let’s go eat.” They all went downstairs and joined Mr. Summers at the breakfast table.

The end result was that Erin was willing to breach the silence that she protected herself with by attempting to have a conversation with Hailey. She’d be willing to back out if Hailey wasn’t receptive to talking, but she had to make the effort. She found Hailey in their bedroom, reading a book. This wasn’t good; if she tried to start a conversation, she’d be interrupting Hailey. She’d have to try some other time.
