I let go of her hand when we got to the garage, hurrying down the steps to unlock the doors on my parents’ ancient car – it didn’t even have a remote! I looked up from that, halfway wondering what was taking Nancy so long, before seeing her still at the top of the stairs, one foot lifted uncertainly.
