The top of the stairs formed a T with a carpeted hallway. There were rooms to the right and to the left. Pictures – flowers and fruit and other still life, mostly – hung at a level height between the doors. There was no way to know which room Emma was hiding in. It was Frank Stockton’s classic story writ large, only this time, the Lady was the Tiger.
Tony picked the first door on his left. It too was unlocked and fell open with no resistance. A vice grip on the tripod, Tony entered. The room was a girl’s bedroom. The walls were a soft yellow with eggshell trim along the baseboards.
