His clumsiness continued to worsen until the merely feeding himself or holding a glass of milk was difficult. He couldn’t even turn doorknobs with one hand; he had to reach up with both hands and grasp the knob between them to torque the bolt back into its housing and free the door from its jamb. Howard’s once firm muscles became soft and pliant as his body continued its metamorphosis into early childhood. His nose flattened and lost its definition, while his high cheekbones receded with his chin until Howard’s face regained the rounded, chubby appearance of extreme youth.
