Kim closed the door quietly behind him and stood a moment at the top of the stairs, allowing his eyes to adjust to the sudden darkness as a last breath of hot and insufferably humid outside air licked his legs like a dragon’s tongue and flowed into the cool depths of the basement below. He groped for the railing and cautiously slid one bare foot off the edge of the top step and down to the next. He did not turn on the light. He did not want anyone to be able to see into the basement from outside or, for that matter, to know that he was down there, even though he was alone in the house all day today.
