That pat certainly was awkward, but while it made Karen squirm uncomfortably she didn’t say anything about it. Instead, she opted to start to answer, “Well, not exactly –”
“Sorry, she’s acting a little fussy today,” Dillion explained a bit hesitantly, before offering his take of, “I think she’s fine to get some food and presents before she really needs a nap, though. Not too bad.”
“A nap?” No, that certainly wasn’t happening. Shaking her head feverishly, the diapered girl demanded, “Nuh-uh! Definitely not gonna take a nap!”
“Alright, birthday girl, whatever you say….” Wait, it was her birthday now? Though baffled by this, Karen didn’t have time to ponder before her mother asked, “But you’re going to be on your best behavior for the guests, aren’t you?”
“Huh? Well, yeah.” Somewhat offended by the suggestion, Karen replied, “I’m always on my best behavior, Mommy!”
