His mother took him off the chair and held him close to her in a tender, maternal hug until his sobs quieted. Then she sat him back on his chair, picked up his napkin and dried his eyes for him before telling him to finish his milk. When he had drunk his milk and she allowed him to leave the table, he went back to his room to read his old books. Thomas remembered his watch and decided to look at it before he started reading. He went over to the dresser to get it and discovered to his dismay that he had become too short to see the top of the dresser where he had placed it two days before. After casting his eyes around the room for some moveable object he could stand on, he reluctantly decided to use a stack of books as a stepstool.
