His mother washed the dishes, then busied herself in his room for hours while he watched TV. When she came into the family room at eight o’clock and told him it was time to go to bed, he became enraged. He stomped his feet on the carpet and screamed that Mary had been right and that his Mother hadn’t given him half of the formula because she thought that she was doing him a favor but because she wanted to control his life. His Mother listened patiently to her four-year-old son’s tantrum without saying a word. When he had wound down, she told him he could stay up until ten o’clock and no longer.
