By the time she concluded with, “I’ll call you back,” she was exhausted. She wasn’t even aware that her parents were standing there. Drew sat down on her bed to one side of her and Nancy to the other. Megan did not appreciate their lack of verbosity. If she was going to be yelled at, let them yell already. The silent treatment was driving her nuts.
“Well?” she asked.
“Well,” Nancy echoed.
Megan sighed. “Look, I know we had a deal, and I really didn’t mean to break it. It was an honest mistake, I swear. An honest mistake. And I’ll try to be careful next time.”
“You’re damn right!” Drew snapped with a sudden forcefulness that disturbed her. “I’m sorry. It’s just…difficult.”

“We were both worried,” Nancy added. “Very much.”
“I was out with friends,” Megan joked. “It wasn’t like I joined the Manson family.”
Apparently, neither of them found this funny.
