Erin’s old house had been reasonably well stocked with tapes and DVDs, but it had been a long time since she’d been taken to the theater. Her stepmother certainly wouldn’t take her, and she tended to argue with Erin’s father if he spent too much time alone with his daughter. Erin had always suspected Mary was jealous of her for taking her father’s attention. Although her dad received more of Mary’s ill will than his daughter for such transgressions, Erin had no desire to see him unhappy, and she never tried to get him to take her out any more than he had to.

She felt a brief pang of despair over the loss of her father, but quickly recomposed herself.
