Erin was relieved. Hailey had indicated that she was interested in continuing the conversation, so Erin could now continue.
“Yeah, I was surprised that you were nice to me about it. I thought I’d be in trouble.”
“Why would you think that?”
That immediately brought her into uncomfortable territory; she trusted Hailey, but there were some things even Hailey didn’t need to know. Why had she mentioned being in trouble? She knew she had certainly acted like she had expected to be in trouble last night, but Hailey hadn’t asked her why at that time, so Erin shouldn’t have brought it up now. Erin could think of nothing to say that would give her a net improvement in position, so she reverted to silence.
