She gathered our clothes together and put them in a clean wastebasket lined with a garbage bag, then tied a knot in the top of the bag and pulled it out of the wastebasket. She set the bag down between us and picked us up one-by-one and put one of us on each hip, then bent over and picked up the bag. She walked down the hall with us riding her hip like infants. Our little bottoms hung out from underneath her arms. I hoped she’d find something to dress us in soon, I didn’t like the idea of parading around in public without any clothes on, even if we were babies again.
She took us to her station wagon and buckled us in the backseat and started the car. Evidently she didn’t take a purse with her when she worked late at night.
