Theodore walked to the Field’s car heedless of the rain dripping off his head and running down his back.
He barely noticed the thunder booming around him as he got into the car and Mr Field drove home.
When they got home, Mrs Field made a hot lunch of soup and sandwiches for them.
Rose fed the baby while Mr Field and Theodore ate, intending to eat her lunch after she fed the baby.
Mr Field went to work after lunch, leaving Theodore and Baby John John to Mrs Fields’s care.
Rose put Baby John John in his playpen and sat down to her meal as Theodore sat silently and watched the rain rolling down outside the window pane.
Theodore felt lost and alone.
