Corporal punishment survey
Hi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.
Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.
School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.
If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.
Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. If you have (as indeed have I) I’d be very grateful if you’d reply to this post giving as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with. However to keep this thread out of the realm of fantasy, I’d ask that you only post facts, and leave the creative writing and long discussions to other forums.
The information I’d love you to provide is the following:
About You:
Gender:
Approximate age when punished:
Approximate year of punishment:
Crime committed or alleged:
About the punishment
Administered by Head, or Staff member:
Gender of staff member:
Location punished (Classroom, Office, Hallway etc):
Type of punishment (Cane,Slipper,Paddle etc):
Number of strokes:
Applied to (Hand, Bottom, Legs etc):
Position adopted (Standing, Bending over Chair, Desk etc):
State of dress (Over Trousers/Skirt, panties, bare etc):
Privacy (In private, In front of Class, With another teacher etc):
About the school
Name of School:
Town:
Country:
Effectiveness
Were you ever punished again for the same offence?:
Do you consider the punishment effective?:
Any other relevant info:
Many thanks for your participation. I will reply to this post myself with the details of the CP I received.
Note: I see no reason why schools should not be named as they were operating completely within the law.

I had to queue first with other boys outside the head’s office, along the corridor. At this school there generally seemed to be a line of pupils awaiting corporal punishment. A number of the teachers would use the slipper on pupils in front of the class. This was one of the three trips I made to the Head’s office (I will also post the other two).

Hi Robin. I don’t know if these are your first posts in this estimable Forum, but if they are may I say a personal welcome.
I hope that you’ll forgive me though if I say that for a ‘Researcher’ (as you style yourself in your email address) you display rather a lack of knowledge about your subject. You say:
In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986.
No, school corporal punishment was legally practised in England (and Wales)until 1999, until 2000 in Scotland, and until 2003 in Northern Ireland. The 1986 legislation only applied to state schools, schools partly funded by the state, and individual pupils in private schools whose fees were paid by state agencies. For a great many pupils in English private schools corporal punishment remained a (legal) reality long after 1986.
I would also suggest that a little perusal of this Forum will find you a great many true accounts along the lines of your survey. Frequently though the school will not be named. The attitude here regarding naming schools has often followed the principle outlined in this post by one of our early eminent contributors, a principle with which I am in full agreement.
Perusal of the excellent Corpun.com World Corporal Punishment Research site will reveal even more accounts of CP in English schools.

Forum Management, I’m afraid that I have realised on seeing the actual post that I have been guilty of an error of misjudgement. While my previous ’email survey’ should not have caused any complications had PC21 not misunderstood the workings of email addresses, the one above could in certain exceptional circumstances.
May I humbly request you to delete the lines referring to and including the email survey please? That is to say from:
I notice that you give your email address.
though to
Hope that helps! and the smile.gif at the end of the post.
If this is not possible please delete the whole post.
Please accept my apologies for causing you this extra work. I shan’t try ’email surveys’ again, but this did seem such a perfect subject for it!

Many thanks for the welcome, as I am indeed new to this forum.
To clarify re the abolishment of corporal punishment in England. I originally put all the dates in my draft, but on re-reading it decided it made the post unnecessary wordy, so I removed them. However your detail is obviously more accurate, many thanks for pointing this out.
I have already studied corpun and as you say its a very valuable resource, but for the reasons I gave in my original post the details of routine, legal punishment in schools can be a little sparse.
Re naming of Schools: I only requested that individuals give as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with – so I leave that up to anyone gracious enough to respond to my post to decide. For myself I am not ashamed of my previous school, it operated within the law and the then educational guidelines. I don’t have anything to hide in naming it, it is mealy an accurate account of an historic event. However one that you wouldn’t find in a newspaper or any other published material.
Many thanks,
Robin.

Robin let me know if you find these two resources helpful. Write swats in search mode when you get into Texas teachers and you will find additional material from Arkansas and Mississippi. There is a newly found resource from India. Sorry for repeating for our veteran viewers but the last posting from Texas was 3/23/10 and IMHO informative. Most of these are not pesters or jesters. They sound too real to be untrue. Girls mostly write in the American site because they are the most likely to be reading the Teachers Chatboard as indicated on a plethora of other subjects.

Hello, Robin
Are you serious about your CP in Schools survey or not?
I found you someone who is willing to complete it and you have not even emailed them back. HEY!
Is this a serious research project or not?
Can you please respond to the person who emailed you last Saturday
Thank you

The worst one that I remember quite well took place in the 6th grade. I had signed up to be in the play and unknown to me we had to wear tights as part of our costumes. To make a long story short I gave my teacher a diffucult time about putting them on.I was still in the changing room trying to decide if I could put them on. Everyone else had changed already and was waiting on me. I finally had put them on after a 15 minute delay. As I was coming out my teacher was coming in. She was very angry. She took me by the hand down to the end of the hallway. She then brought out a small chair.I had to wait 20 minutes for her to come back. When she did I had to bend over the back of the chair spread my legs hold out my butt and recieve 10 hard swats on my butt . Which was extremly painful and embarrasing.I only had a pair of white tights to protect my butt. When she was done I recieved 2 extra swats across the back of my legs because of all the diffuculty I gave her while she was paddling me. I had welts and bruises on my butt for 3 days. I can remember how hard it was to sit down. I would of liked to have given you more detail but due to space I couldn’t. Any questions feel free to contact me.
