six of the best : Yes, it was a Roman Catholic Schools.   Most parents definitely were still spanking at home in Australia in the 70’s.  Canes, straps, wooden spoons and the good old hand were all used as punishments from parents when we were growing up in the 70’s.  It had pretty much stopped by the 1980’s though.

I’ve never been able to find a picture of this particular strap so can’t share that.

So I was right about it being a RC school. Parental spanking declined in the UK from the 1970s onwards. Some continued into the 1980s. Most used slippers on sons and daughters. Virtually gone by the early 1990s.

Yes !  Government schools in Australia typically used a cane for punishment at that time.

Hi everyone, I am new here too.

How did you feel about getting on the hand? I have noticed that people who went to schools that made you bend over often think that hand strapping is cruel and barbaric and even dangerous. Whereas people who had to hold their hand out think the idea of getting it across your backside was undignified and even kinky…

There was no choice at school. You just did as you were told, either hold your hand out or bend over when told. Some schools that were mixed caned girls across their hands and made the boys bend over. I never heard of any parents punishing across hands but perhaps some did. I’m sure that some boys and girls experienced the cane or strap across their hands in school and bent over for spanking or slippering at home.

We didn’t get a choice either, but it was by no means standard in England when I was at school in 1970s.  At my school, we would get caned on the bum, but the school down the road did it across the hand.  And as Beanokid1 suggests, I was very glad we didn’t get it across the hand, as that did sound more painful – especially after seeing the caning scene in the film ‘Kes’.

I think it varied.  I know some schools caned across the bum but the primary school used either the cane on the hand or the ruler on the back of the legs.  The secondary school only used the strap on the hands.

There wasn’t any choice.  I never got it on the bum at school so can’t say what that was like.  I know I hated standing there out the front of the class knowing everyone was watching you.  Holding out your hands and then watching as they were maneuvered into position and then lined up for the stroke and then waiting for the strap to swing down onto your hands (since it all happened right in front of you) was no fun either…..

A mate who went to the all-boys state school in my town said that boys who were caned there did sometimes get a choice of hand or bottom. Since we were both conformists who’d never experienced it, we didn’t have much basis for deciding which was worse. Holding your hand out in front of the class sounds pretty bad; but then touching your toes would be pretty bad as well….

At school we were all liable to be caned or slippered if we misbehaved. So it wasn’t that embarrassing. First time was scary it’s true.
I was always intrigued when  other lads talked being spanked at home, something that I’d never have admitted to getting myself.

Yes, you’re probably right.  Bending over in front of the whole class with your bum on display (especially with trousers down or worse …)  would be pretty embarrassing.
