It’s been a while since I posted a memory of my own experience so here is another.  Same school as the previous story.  This teacher (Mr James) was only one of about three that I can remember who had a different strap to the normal thick rubber one that the other teachers used.  This one was slightly longer – probably about 45 cm and was only 1cm thick but about 3 cm wide.  It was squared off at the ends and was very flexible and could be rolled-up.  It was brown in color and made from leather.

Here is how it unfolded.

We were in an elective class with only about 15 students.  Myself and my friend (Mike) were sitting together and we were supposed to be writing an essay on some boring book that we had read.  We had already been warned to stop talking once and keep quiet (as had others) but after staying quiet for a while we started whispering to each other again.

The teacher looked up and saw us and said “OK you two – out the front” .  Rats.  We were busted.  Mike and I walked out the front and stood near the desk.  Mr James stood up, picked up his strap (the one described earlier) and led us away from the desk towards the side of the room.

Although I was closest, he started with Mike.  “Hands out” came the order and Mike slowly extended his hands out in front of him one hand over the other.  James grabbed Mike’s hands and quite roughly moved Mike’s arms and hands so that the hands were at the required height (James was quite tall !) and then flattened out the hands and fingers.    Satisfied the hands were in the right position, he bent forward and placed one end of the strap lengthwise along Mike’s hand so that the fingers and half the palm were covered.  He stepped back into position adjusting his stance until he was set.  The class was dead silent as they watched the action unfold.  After a few moments he swung the strap back over his shoulder and started swinging it quickly back and forward high in the air.  I looked at James’s face and he was concentrating, and his eyes were fixed on his target.  Suddenly, the strap swung down and crashed onto Mike’s waiting hands – a sharp cracking sound echoed around the room.  I winced at the ferocity of the stroke and Mike gasped and pulled his hands away bending over trying to nurse his wounded hand in the opposite armpit.  He was given a few moments to recover before being ordered to swap hands.  Mike’s hands were once again roughly moved into position and the strap was placed on the target before being swung back and then waved back and forwards several times (each wave seemed to get faster).  On about the sixth or seventh wave, the strap flew down and cracked through Mikes waiting hands.  I watched as Mike cried out and pulled his hands away – desperately trying to ease the sting by shaking them – his face was red as he clasped his hands together and he was told to sit down.

Now it was my turn.  I had a close view of what happened to Mike and I remember being terrified as the 2 strokes delivered to Mike were very hard.  “Right – let’s go” he said to me – and I gingerly held my hands out one over the other knowing full well what was about to happen.  My hands were grabbed and my arms roughly pushed inwards, upwards and then outwards until they were at the required height and then bent my fingers down and pulled them straight and flat.  As he’d done with Mike, he placed the strap on my fingers and palm and then stood back and I could feel the stitching of the strap and the roughness as he slid it slightly so it was in the right position.  He quickly swung it back and waved it backwards and forwards.  I have to say that I recall standing there in that position watching the strap waving backwards and forward and not knowing which swing was going to come your way was quite distressing.  It’s not really comfortable standing in that position !!!  Well, I didn’t have to wait too long as after about six or seven swings he bought it down at frightening speed and the strap crashed through my hands.  A split second later I felt  a burning sting that kept intensifying as I pulled my hands away and rubbed the sore hand.  I was only given a moment before being ordered to place my hands out again for the same treatment.  As soon as they were in position they were maneuvered into place and before long I was again mesmerized by the strap waving quickly backwards and forwards and waiting for the actual stroke to come.  After several moments, the strap flew down and crashed through my hands.  I knew that was the last stroke so although it stung like hell I managed to keep my composure as I nursed my wounded hands.

As I sat down, I remember thinking that the strap used by that teacher certainly sounded fierce but actually didn’t sting as much as the thick, dense rubber ones used by the other teachers.  However, I know that Mr James was very good at hurting with his strokes – as I had the misfortune later that year of getting the rubber strap from him as he couldn’t find his own strap.  I thought my hands had been cut open when that happened – but that’s a story for another day.

It has been some time since I last contributed to this post. My apologies if some here have read this before. It happened over 60 years ago now, at the time when school and home corporal punishment was seen as the norm.
The great majority of UK boys’ school used it, some much more then others. I knew very little of what happened in girls’ schools back then having no sisters. Home discipline varied greatly from none at all in some families to frequent and firm spankings in others.About Me:

Just into second year at grammar school. I knew of other boys being caned but had escaped it myself. With the two other lads I was play fighting on the stairs in the lunch break. It was quiet and as we reached the landing the headmaster appeared. He said very little as he’d probably seen the look of horror on our faces. We were just told to go and to wait outside of his office. As we walked there one of the other two lads said we might get a caning. He said he’d had it once before and it ‘bloody hurt’. This did nothing but to scare me even more. Eventually the headmaster returned, and we were called into his office. After a firm telling off about the dangerous of playing foolish games on the stairs, he then moved a few things on his desk and stood up. We were standing in a line with me in the middle. The boy on my left was told to stand at the end of the desk. The headmaster retrieved a cane from the top of a bookshelf. He said to my friend “You know what to do.” With this the boy bent over the desk. It was like a bad dream, a nightmare, as I watched him take three hard whacks of the cane. Then it was “Now you.” calling me by my surname. I walked to the desk and bent over as the first lad had done. The headmaster said, “Right over.” As soon as I wriggled into place the cane landed. It was awful. I received my three and staggered back to where I’d been standing. My bottom was throbbing, and I don’t remember much of the other boy being caned. We were then told to get along to our first lesson of the afternoon. My bottom hurt all afternoon and was sore that evening. I’d had the occasional spanking at home before that, but they were nothing like the cane.

At the primary school I went to, it was the wooden ruler on the back of the legs for the younger children and the cane on the hands for the older ones. At secondary it was the strap on the hands. They all hurt !  I’m sure the cane across the behind hurt too – but thankfully I never experienced that.

I was spanked on bare bottom by my schoolmistress at the age of 15.

It may surprise you that there are, or at least there certainly used to be, those here who would say ‘you lucky chap’!   Provided of course that the schoolmistress concerned was young and pretty.  There are one or two posts with fond memories of  SCP administering young and pretty schoolmistresses.  There’s even a claim that a class of teenage boys carefully coached a young and pretty schoolmistress in the punitive use of the PE shoe (the slipper as we call it in the UK).  She proved to have quite an aptitude for it, or so it was claimed!

But seriously, your above contribution is really highly unsatisfactory, especially so in the ‘corporal punishment survey’ thread.  Your readers are left with far too many queries.  Your gender (most will have assumed male, but is that correct)?  What for (offense precipitating the punishment)?  What with (hand or implement)?  How (punitive posture and disrobing procedure enforced on you)?  How many whacks?  In front of class (mixed or single sex) or in private?  Not to mention where (country or region of country) and when (approximate year).

Such extended information is the very minimum likely to satisfy our many earnest seekers after the truth about school corporal punishment.  I do so hope that you’ll find it possible to provide at least some of it!

I was often beaten during my six years in middle school and senior high school. My class teacher was a female teacher. She loved us very much, just like our mother. But she also treated us very strictly. If we made mistakes，she would punish us for spanking. When I was fifteen years old，I was in the first grade of senior high school，once I studied at her home. Because I didn’t concentrate on her class, she was very angry, so she let me lie on her lap and took my pants off, my bare ass was beaten hard by her palm, until I cried and begged her for mercy, she didn’t stop spanking me after getting the assurance that I would study hard in the future. Thank you for the full account of the incident.  Most unfair that you were subjected to the indignity of having your bottom bared to be spanked while your female classmate was spared this.  Our former contributor Jenny, a staunch advocate of the equality of the sexes, would have been outraged at such blatant discrimination.  However it does sound as though your class teacher at least sought to be equal handed in that she subjected the girl to a more severe spanking despite sparing her the disrobing.

You were I assume in a rather competitive academic environment where extra tuition outwith school, such as at a teacher’s home, was normal and the pursuit of excellence was held to justify severe corporal punishment for those not working hard enough.

My class teacher is a woman of high moral character, she refused money when we studied in her home. At that time, if our records of studies dropped, she would take us to her home on the weekend and help us improve our records of studies, this often meant that she would punish us for spanking, whether male students or female students. Although she is very strict, she really loves her students very much, so when she punished us for spanking, she only used the palm of her hand instead of other tools.

Due to the origins of this topic being over a decade old, I’ve not stuck to pre-formed template, so please forgive me.  I have though tried to answer the key questions. Firstly, I must state that I do not feel comfortable naming my primary school.  One of the teachers was a good friend of my late mum and since her passing we exchange xmas cards and a yearly letter.  Furthermore, up to 2019 one of the teachers from my time was still teaching at the very same primary school.  I hope folk respect my decision not to name it.  Right now, I can think of no issue mentioning my junior school by name as it no longer exists, however a good researcher could probably work out my primary school from this information so I will refrain from doing so.

As mentioned previously at my primary school most physical punishments were spontaneous and usually came about by a few slaps to the bare legs with a hand.  I did witness a couple of over-the-knee bottom spankings and recall receiving one myself which I think was for having a tantrum.  Most of the teachers were female, I can only remember 2 male teachers.  I do remember receiving one of the hardest hand smacks to the bottom from a female student teacher for impersonating Joey Deacon.

In junior school, we still had mostly female teachers and some were very slap happy.  In class it was usually hand or ruler to the bare wrist.  In P.E it was slightly different in the case of we had to take off our plimsoll and were whacked on the bottom by it, again very spontaneous and usually no more 3 whacks.  Both of these types of punishments happened to my peers and myself on many an occasion.  Also, in class we had just one male teacher who threatened to bring his slipper (Horace) out of retirement, but I never witnessed him use it. There were occasions when we could be sent to the head, deputy or a specific teacher for a slippering.  After, England were knocked out of the 1986 World Cup I was sent for a slippering by my form tutor for drawing a penis on the head of Diego Maradona on a poster.  However, the teacher didn’t go through it and he just gave me a bollocking instead.  Around the same time (I think it must have been end of term) our class were giving a treat of watching the movie Ghostbusters.  I stated to my friend that I thought our female P.E teacher looked like Gozer and unfortunately I was overheard and we were both slippered by the very same teacher for being disrespectful.  This was harsh on my friend as all he’d done was laugh.  This was the last time I was physically punished by a female teacher.  Interestingly, I recently came across a photograph of a younger Janet Dines and she bore a very strong physical resemblance to our teacher.

By the time I started senior school CP was banned.  There were a couple of incidents that I probably deserved it and would have been given it had I been a year or 2 older.  The first instance was when the school tried a prefect system and I (along with others) were caught by a female prefect taking a shortcut home through a hole in the school fence.  She tried to give us a friendly warning and I launched into a tirade of nasty words that left her in tears.  To make things worse, she was actually a nice girl and never even reported us.  I did apologize to her albeit 25 years later.  Another time I ended up being suspended for a week after getting into a fight with a bully.  I also remember another incident when a small group of us had been up to mischief in science, the male teacher actually stated that had it been a couple of years earlier we would have been caned (much to the delight of the girls).  He then ventured into his prep room and I clearly remember one of the lads saying that if he was getting a cane out that he was going to do a runner and I agreed I would do the same.  Obviously he never did and we ended up having to write an essay on why Father Christmas doesn’t visit naughty boys.

Did any of it do me any good or improve my behaviour?  Possibly!  Compared to previous generations what happened to me was relatively mild.  Thankfully, I never received the cane, and from what I’ve read it has caused permanent physical damage to some folk. As stated earlier, I would have ran a mile rather than submit to it, such was my mind set.  The hand/ruler slappings and slipperings which I encountered certainly stung a bit, but actually were probably milder then what I received at home and the discomfort dispersed within a few hours with no physical lasting effect.  I would probably argue that as short sharp shock treatments, they were probably effective and contributed to keeping me out of further mischief and teaching me respect.

There is absolutely no problem with you not naming your schools but can you please indicate in which country or county or city and decade?
