Buses and more buses! My interest springs from growing up in the West Country. Bristol buses were built in Bristol by Bristol Commercial Vehicles and the bodywork added in Lowestoft on the east coast. I remember seeing the basic chassis and engine units being driven across England by a driver sitting in the open, no bodywork whatsoever, doubt if he even had a seat belt. A drive of over 250 miles even with modern roads. A two day journey back then I guess.

Classroom canings were an everyday event at primary school. Each teacher had their own cane and it was routine to get 1 or 2 strokes for even talking. It was common for a dozen or more of the class to be brought out and caned; I even remember one occasion when a teacher caned the entire class of 44 pupils.

I was fairly new to the school and one of the local bullies provoked me into a fight. Because of the seriousness of the offence, we were both taken to the Deputy Headmaster by our class teacher. He gave us a short lecture and then gave us each two of the belt. Every child in Scotland knew the procedure for getting the belt. You put your hands out, and if getting more than one stroke, changed hands after each stroke. The other boy was belted first and so I knew I was getting two strokes. It was all a bit of a blur. I remember it being sore but not incredibly so. Looking at it now, it seems ridiculous to deal with such young children in this way particularly when what had happened was very understandable and must have happened to most new pupils.

This was my only ‘proper’ belting. I was running in the corridor when the Housemaster, who had a fearsome reputation and who had reduced some of the hard cases to tears, came round the corner. He told me to follow him to his office. I was petrified as I knew the inevitable outcome and his reputation. When we got there, he asked if I knew not to run in the corridor. When I said “Yes’, he told me to put my hands up. He took his belt from under his gown and gave me two quick strokes and told me to get back to my classroom. It was sore, with a split second of numbness followed by a scorching, stinging pain, but not incredibly so. I think he was in a bit of a rush so just went through the motions. It was certainly not as hard as he could have belted me. I was very lucky in that I got to my class just in time so that no-one knew that I had got the belt. I was one of the class ‘swots’ and so the humiliation would have been worse than the pain in many ways.

I can’t remember the exact circumstances, but I think the class, of about thirty five pupils, had been a bit unruly and to everyone’s surprise the teacher, who was an experienced middle aged lady, announced that the whole class, boys and girls, would get the belt. This would be the first belting for a few of the boys and many of the girls. We all lined up and filed to the front of the class where she was waiting. She had a reputation as a proficient belter and those at the head of the queue got two fairly hard strokes, one on each hand. I was somewhere in the middle and while the strokes stung, the pain didn’t last too long. By the end of the queue the strokes were getting less and less severe. I think by the end the teacher was regretting her impetuosity. Everyone took it well as while the strokes hurt a bit, they weren’t especially sore.

During a lesson Mrs G bent over to reach something. I wolf whistled her. The lesson bell rang as I walked back so I was giggled at by other kids. I entered the class room and she took the cane. She read me the riot act before telling me to bend over the desk. She gave me 6 strokes before ordering me to return the cane and book. I had to endure walking back past her next class of third formers. I was chatting with some boys when the discussion turned to a certain stunning lady teacher. I commented on her perfect assets, namely her legs, bum and cleavage. I got overheard by the Senior Mistress who called us all over. She questioned us all but had only heard my comments. She warned the other lads and marched me to her office. She lectured me severely before saying that she should report me to the Head who may expel me. She offered me the option of her punishment. I decided immediately to accept her punishment. She got her senior cane and ordered me to drop my trousers and bend over a chair. She gave me six of the very best before writing in her punishment book. It merely read six strokes on bottom, no mention of trousers removed. Finally she dismissed me.

That was my final caning before I left the school. All my canings were well deserved and my last two were the result of being a cheeky, horny, teenage boy.

An excellent summary, thank you.  I am envious.  As long term habitués of this estimable Forum will tell you I am deeply embittered never to have been caned at school at all, let alone by a female teacher and with my trousers down!  As a consequence of this grievous deficiency in my life experience I have spent the last 16 years trying to out-contribute every one else, excelled only by a much missed former contributor who had also never been caned at school.  However he had managed to be threatened with being bent over and beaten with a yard stick by a nun, which I always felt put him one up on me!

Any other relevant info: The school was in the hall sat on the floor prior to assembly starting and it was noisy due to kids chatting. The Deputy Headmistress walked in and demanded that anyone speaking had to stand up. Initially only a couple of kids stood up but she continued and said that anyone who she had spotted who did not stand would be caned. At this point about ten more of us stood up thinking that she was not going to cane us. Sadly we were mistaken as she lined up the second group including me on the stage. The first two boys were told they were excused as they had admitted the offence immediately. Miss S then collected her cane and called the boys forward. Eight boys lined up and she told the first boy to hold his hand out which she caned. Then she told him to hold out the other hand and repeated the stroke. She continued along the line including me until only two girls were left. The boys were told to take our places which we did. The two girls were then given two whacks each with a ruler before being told to take their places. Equality did not apply to Miss S. no other pupils were called out so it seems she was bluffing about seeing any one person, indeed she just used that threat to get us to stand up. This was my first ever caning and the only one on my hands (thankfully).

The PE master always gave the hardest slipperings at my school. I avoided them although some of my friends were not so lucky! The slipper was used quite regularly for minor misbehaviour and some teachers gave a choice of a whacking instead of detention.

The PE teachers and the woodwork/metalwork teachers, many of whom had been tradesmen before qualifying as teachers, were the most feared at my school.

Another factor is that most of these teachers had experienced the war so giving a schoolboy very sore hands wasn’t a particularly big deal for them.
