Hi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.

Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.

School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.

If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.

Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. If you have (as indeed have I) I’d be very grateful if you’d reply to this post giving as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with. However to keep this thread out of the realm of fantasy, I’d ask that you only post facts, and leave the creative writing and long discussions to other forums.

1965 received three strokes of the cane in office for smoking in empty changing rooms was 17 years old at the time.

I think we might have one of those cases where we in Britain and you in the US are divided by a common language! When you say “over shorts”, does that refer to your underwear (e.g. boxer shorts) or to shorts that you happened to be wearing at the time for sports or PE? In other words, did you get the paddle over just your underwear or were you wearing underwear under your shorts?

I noticed you got that third paddling when you were 18 and in the senior year. At your school, was it unusual for girls in the senior year to be paddled or was it accepted as a normal punishment even at that age if you wanted to avoid detentions or suspension?

In the UK when CP in school was still legal, it would have been pretty unusual for pupils (students) of either gender to be given corporal punishment at 18.

This was the last one received, as a High School Senior. I was paddled two other times in the same school previously.

While not severe, it did sting enough through thin cotton shorts that I could not help rubbing my butt a little. It was considered bad form to show any reaction at all. The paddle was made from an old weightlifting belt, cut down to a rectangular shape with a wood handle attached. Wooden paddles actually hurt more. The coaches used the leather ones frequently for minor infractions. Being out of uniform (kit for those in the UK) was by far the most common. Others included profanity, tardiness, truancy (skipping class), fighting, being where you shouldnt and oddly, boxer-type underwear showing. We were required to wear a jock, but no actual check was ever done. Briefs (Y-fronts) were most common at the time and did support the “family jewels” with the added bonus of a little more protection from the paddle. I had none this time.

I notice that you were paddled over a skirt, jeans and shorts in your 3 punishments. I wonder if you found it less embarrassing bending over in jeans or shorts rather than a skirt and whether the licks were less painful over the jeans than the skirt or thinner shorts.

When I said ‘shorts’ I meant over shorts with underwear underneath. Though I’m not sure how much protection I got from the underwear. That’s something I think us girls got a raw deal on compared with boys.

As to your other question, I wouldn’t say ‘unusual’ but it didn’t happen a whole lot either. The discipline options were the same for all students regardless of grade/age, so it wasn’t seen as something unusual. Having said that I’m pretty sure senior students were in trouble less than other students, so it stands to reason that they were paddled less frequently than younger students.

The skirt that I was wearing that time wasn’t particularly short or anything, so there was no real issue with it being any more embarrassing that time than any other.

As to the pain question, the skirt was a denim jeans skirt, so it was pretty similar to getting paddled with jeans on. The shorts were significantly thinner and this made a significant difference, both to the pain and the marks left. Though the number of swats I took that time, and the person who paddled me that time, were also contributing factors to that.

Hi Lyla,

As you mentioned that the shorts were thinner than jeans would have been, those four swats must have hurt a lot. Were you in tears afterwards or did you manage to take it without crying?

I imagine most boys probably tried to tough it out without crying when they were paddled, but I guess it probably wasn’t so embarrassing for a girl to be seen in tears after getting a hard paddling.

Positions: normally touching toes as it was all boys
Administered by all teachers and head master for severe cases
Clothing allowed was normally trousers with shirt and vest pulled back to reduce padding but occasional bare buttocks.
Where : The punishment was normally in front of class or in private with head.
My first experience: In the gym wearing only thin cotton shorts with no nickers touching my toes infront of class.
What. 6 of the best by the PT master using my own slipper.
Effect: extreme pain and bruising but I was proud I did nt cry or reesist.
Reason for punishment: I did not unlace my gym shoe when I took it off and I was made an example of for being lazy.
Did I repeat the misdemeanor: No but once I had taken this punishment I became a regular recipient as I no longer felt I needed to maintain my previous high level of conduct> I found the slipper was preferable to the stick or cane but I accepted their use on me without complaint to my parents.

Any other relevant info: I was rarely in ANY trouble at school, so I was shocked when this happened. But that teacher had really been cracking down on profanity and had made a big deal about it. In November I slipped and said “a–” when refering to a politician, and got off with a warning. In December I dropped a book and the f-bomb popped out. I wasn’t so lucky the second time.

Any other relevant info: It was a stupid dare I didn’t even want to do. I had gotten made fun of for being chicken the day before when I tried to get out of having to shower after PE class, so the next day when my friends were daring me to be cool and prove I wasn’t chicken in this instance, I went for it. Unfortunately the bus driver found out when other kids told on me. It hurt like the dickens.
