Corporal punishment survey
Hi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.
Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.
School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.
If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.
Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. If you have (as indeed have I) I’d be very grateful if you’d reply to this post giving as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with. However to keep this thread out of the realm of fantasy, I’d ask that you only post facts, and leave the creative writing and long discussions to other forums.
The information I’d love you to provide is the following:
About You:
Gender:
Approximate age when punished:
Approximate year of punishment:
Crime committed or alleged:
About the punishment
Administered by Head, or Staff member:
Gender of staff member:

Name of School:

Country:

Were you ever punished again for the same offence?:
Do you consider the punishment effective?:
Any other relevant info:
Many thanks for your participation. I will reply to this post myself with the details of the CP I received.
Note: I see no reason why schools should not be named as they were operating completely within the law.
Andrew 505, I think you got off lightly. I would have forced you to spend a Saturday morning detention playing three hours of Caleb Simper – that’d have taught you!
I was going to suggest that the headmaster must have been a bit of a heathen – but I do not wish to offend heathens who contribute to the forum. So I will just say your headmaster sadly did not appreciate great music.

Age: 10
Grade: 5th
Administered by: Mrs Joss (Headmistress)
Implement: Cane
Administered: Buttocks
Number receieved: 4 strokes
position: Bending over and touching toes
Clothing: Full school uniform and caned over my school shorts
Offence: School fruit fight at lunchtime
Year: 1977
Other:
I was the third boy caned out of four boys and we were lined up outside the headmistress’ office facing the wall with hands on head. I could hear the cane striking the first two boy’s bottoms and the second boy cried. I cried after my punishment and I had to walk back to class with the first boy who was caned after my punishment. Our teacher told us to sit at our desks and I remember wincing as soon as my bottom hit the hard wooden chair. The marks had fully dissipated after three days.
Punished again for the same offence? No
I was caned three more times, once again in 6th grade and twice in high school.

Were you ever punished again for the same offence?: No
Do you consider the punishment effective?:
The punishment was effective however I do not feel that I deserved to be caned for my offence.
Any other relevant info:
It was a month into the new school year when I was caned and when I was summoned to the Headmasters office there was one boy waiting to see him. I had to stand outside the study at the request of the school secretary and face the wall with my hands on my head. The headmaster flexed the cane 3 times in front of me before ordering my to lower my shorts and bend over. He tapped my bottom twice before each stroke and he counted each stroke out loud, unlike my primary school headmistress Mrs Joss. There was another boy being caned while I was waiting and I could hear him sobbing while the cane whacked his bottom.

I have made some comments on this incident in the “Six strokes – is it the End of the World?” thread. If Nathan has no objection, I would like to pose some questions that might help me and other contributors to decide whether we agree that the caning was unjustified.
In the minutes before the incident, had you been running around at the bus stop behaving boisterously with other pupils or were you there on your own?
Had you been running around with the drinks can in your hand?
Had you deliberately shaken the can?
Had you intended to spray other pupils?
Were you standing still at the moment you tried to open the can?
As you might have expected a shaken can to spray out, did you take care not to let it do so?
Did you even think or care that the lady may be sprayed?
When the drink sprayed out, did you immediately apologise to the lady?
Did you laugh?
Did you make any rude remarks if she remonstrated with you?
Did you stay there or run away?
If the lady later made a complaint to the school, she must have felt fairly strongly about your behaviour before and after the incident. Why do you think that was the case?
If you don’t mind giving a few answers, we might get a clearer picture of what happened.

Hi,
I was mucking about a little at the time the drink sprayed on the lady. The reason why the drink sprayed was that I had accidently bumped into the lady while mucking about and dropped the soft drink. I had not deliberately sprayed the lady with the drink and some did end up on my hands and jumper but I think that she was having a bad morning and that we were mucking about probably annoyed her and getting sprayed did not help matters so for her it was enough to call the school. I said “sorry madam” when I bumped into her and it was interesting seeing her the next morning and I expect that the headmaster had called her afterwards to inform her that I had been caned and it was difficult to look at her the next day. Some may agree that I should have been caned as hjc suggests but “six of the best”? I am not sure.

Hi Nathan Donnelly,
I appreciate you telling us about your experience, it adds to our knowledge of how corporal punishment was used – or abused – in times past.
I did not intend to suggest you should have been caned and I think, having heard the full story, you were probably treated rather severely. It sounds as though there were others at the scene who were also “larking around”, who probably should have taken some share of the blame. What I don’t understand is how the lady at the bus stop knew your name to report you to the school?
I know, having contact with a number of very elderly people, and being an OAP myself, that groups of boisterous kids can feel threatening. Indeed, as our contributor Doctor Dominum discovered to his cost, the threat can be real as well as imaginary.
All that having been said, you did recover from your six of the best, even if there is some continuing resentment towards the headmaster and the lady who reported you.

Approximate age when punished:
Approximate year of punishment:
Crime committed or alleged:

Many thanks for your participation. I will reply to this post myself with the details of the CP I received.
