Attending a comprehensive School in the 1980s i witnessed many
canings.Every teacher and department had canes at this school and others
out there today will verify this who attended this school at the time.The school was Warbreck Boys school Blackpool.I myself was carefull not to be caned but fell foul of a music teacher Mr Trusslove who used a metre wooden
ruler on my backside for not clapping a piece of music written on the blackboard correctly.One whack at 14years old and this was enough to cause
bruising but other boys felt his bizarre range of dicipline impliments on their behinds.The impliment used to play the xylophone a stick with a ball on
the end was used to whack boys on the backside as well as plastic shatterproof ruler another favourite of his tools.I personally saw him use
the cane on a boy giving him two strokes on his behind the boy was Nick Tampin.I saw the results during Games showers of a very severe caning on a boy Darren Howarth from a PE teacher but will refrain from the name of the
teacher as i believe his Mum was going to take the teacher to court over the
caning.The bruising has always stuck in my mind as to how brutal some teachers could cane you and this particular PE teacher lectured all of us in
the changingroom when i first started at this school about 12years old in the first year.I remember we all changed into games kit and he asked a boy to
fetch his cane from his PE office it had blue tape bands at each end and he whacked it down on the bench in the changing room to show how hard he would beat anyone who broke his rules.Maths teacher Mr Ward another frightening man who once hit me across the face for talking during a maths test.During the fourth year when i was in another maths class with a Mr Woods we all heard a boy in the corridor crying and moaning.Next Mr Ward appeared at the class room we were in and asked Mr woods if he could be a witness for a caning.We were told to stay in our seats as Mr Woods left the class and joined Mr Ward in the corridor.I will never forget the pleading cries from the boy who later we found out to be called Paul O’Connor who was refusing to bend over.He was eventually caned and judging by the screams it was a terrible experience for the boy.I will mention at this stage also that Mr Ward had a very long cane about 12mm thick and it was black and it was after witnessing these canings i decided to wag school a lot as School became a frightening place for me.My Mum had to go and see the Head who at that time was a Mr Bayliss due to my absence at school and explain how i had become terrified of a certain maths teacher and the Head explained to me that if i wagged school again he would cane me.I can honestly recount at least a dozen more times i saw canings in corridors around the school.One teacher who was our RK teacher called his cane Dan Tanner from the TV detective series.Many will remember him as Alf Warley or Mr Warley and everything he had was wrapped in cellotape even his cane.I can name many who i saw caned or was around in class at the time as it was the norm then and there were certainly a wide variety of canes used.Many will also remember although i thought personally it was a sick joke that some canes had NSPCC stickers stuck on the end,somehow don’t think they would have got away with that today.Justin Teal another boy in my year always being caned,Mr Pilkington Deputy Head caned him around the time the cane was being banned because he was boasting that the cane could not be used anymore by teachers.I could go on forever on what happened at this School regarding canings,all of which are 100% true events and can name most boys and teachers as it sticks in my mind to this day.

Corporal punishment survey

Hi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.

Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.

School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.

If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.

Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. If you have (as indeed have I) I’d be very grateful if you’d reply to this post giving as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with. However to keep this thread out of the realm of fantasy, I’d ask that you only post facts, and leave the creative writing and long discussions to other forums.

Dear HJC,

I did not read your reply to my caning experience with the view that you felt that I deserved my punishment. As I stated I feel as though my punishment was warranted but I have always felt that 3-4 strokes over my school shorts rather than 6 strokes over my underpants that I received. While I did resent the lady who reported me as well as the headmaster for caning me initially looking back larking about on the platform could have caused injury to myself or another person especially the lady. My daughters were spanked for over-stepping the boundaries for behaviour in public so in a way I have continued the tradition of punishment that was inflicted on me for larking about in public.

In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.

The strap was two feet long and had flexible cork sewn between to strips of leather. Our PE teacher and the boys I truanted with were present in the office during the punishment. I was first to be strapped and we were in our PE kit of a white polo top with the school emblem on the left breast pocket, thin mid thigh length blue shorts, blue socks and white plimsolls. Our head left a good 4 seconds between each stroke of the strap and we had to count each whack out loud. After the strap had been administered we had to stand with our hands on our heads and witness the remaining strapppings to prevent us from rubbing our buttocks. We were teased in the showers at the conclusion of the class as it was clear from the state of our bottoms that we had been punished. The marks on my bottom took 4 days to dissipate.

My friend and I had to stand behind our desks with our hands on our heads. Our headmistress called us to the front of the classroom and informed the class why we were being punished. After our punishment we had to sit down and I remember fighting back tears because of my stinging bottom.
