At mine most of the caning was done by the Prefects, though occasionally the Headmaster caned serious offenders. In both instances on the trousers, bent over, as at your school. With regard to what it was like, I’m told it hurt – a lot! However I only saw a cane once in my school days, on the table in front of which you stood when up before the Prefects’ court. Luckily I got lines.
I’m intrigued! At my boys grammar school (which was actually a direct-grant school, so semi-independent), the Head Boy was allowed to use the slipper (a traditional rubber-soled plimsoll), but never a cane. Such slipperings were done in private in the Prefects common room. I’m not sure how many whacks the Head Boy was allowed to give – it certainly wasn’t more than six. No other Prefects were allowed to administer any kind of corporal punishment, although they could give lines and detentions (and quite often did!). Only the headmaster could use a cane.
Could any of the Prefects use a cane at your school, or was it limited to a group of “senior” Prefects? How many strokes were they allowed to give? Could they also use the slipper for lesser offences?
It sounds like all Prefects’ canings were done in one room, the Prefects’ court. It sounds very ritualistic – can you describe the procedure? Was the cane a traditional crook-handled one?
Incidentally how many lines were you given instead of a caning? I always wonder how many lines would be considered equivalent in severity to one stroke of the cane.

Corporal punishment survey
Hi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.
Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.
School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.
If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.
Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. If you have (as indeed have I) I’d be very grateful if you’d reply to this post giving as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with. However to keep this thread out of the realm of fantasy, I’d ask that you only post facts, and leave the creative writing and long discussions to other forums.
The information I’d love you to provide is the following:

Were you ever punished again for the same offence?: No but the second time I got corporal punishment I was caught because the teacher thought I was doing the same thing and she seemed to think it was still almost the same thing even though I didn’t agree and still don’t agree.
Do you consider the punishment effective?: Yes
Any other relevant info: At my school you were more likely to be expelled than caned – it was only used if they’d already decided to expel you but also decided you deserved another chance. Getting the police visiting the school and apparently the local newspaper asking questions as well really upset the Headmistress and I was very lucky to get the second chance and was grateful for it although not as grateful as I would have been if I hadn’t been caned. I felt like I was treated a bit unfairly as I was one of the best behaved boys in the school and they wanted to make a point that I wasn’t getting any special treatment. I think I’d have been less likely to get the cane if my record had been a bit worse even though if it had been really bad, they might have just expelled me. I also thought it was pretty brutal to get six of the best but apparently it had been decided that because the cane was a last resort whenever it was used it had to be six of the best. And even if I accept I deserved to get the cane I was given two extra strokes because I reacted to being caned and I thought that was very unfair.

Any other relevant info: Slippering was more common than caning, but was still unusual, especially once you were out of the first and second year. I am not sure how rare it really was because I didn’t tell anybody who didn’t already know that it had happened to me and as it was reasonably private it could have happened more often than we knew about but I think it was rare. My teacher had noticed me selling computer discs to a girl and she thought I was doing the same thing that I had got the cane for but I was just selling the girl a copy of a computer game. I saw this as totally different. The teacher didn’t. She told me if she reported me it would be enough to get me expelled and so.
She tried to give the girl a detention but she asked if she could be slippered instead and she agreed. I did not get to see this – I really wish I had – but I did ask her later what she had got and I remember her answer – four whacks and I didn’t like it!

I’ve had a lot of experience of being caned as an adult (voluntarily, of course) and I would definitely say being caned on the hand hurts more than being caned on the bottom at least when we are talking about single strokes. But your hands go numb faster so after the second stroke on the hands it doesn’t really get any worse – not that every stroke doesn’t hurt but it doesn’t hurt much worse than the one before. Across the bottom, it takes more like eight or nine strokes before you get that plateau effect. At least that’s how it works for me.
Incidentally, the strap works differently – a strap on the hands seems to keep building pain for three or four strokes, even though the first stroke is slightly less than that from the cane.
If I was advising somebody about what they should choose in terms of punishment – assuming they wanted to keep pain to a minimum – I would say that if you are getting less than three strokes you want them on the bottom. If you are getting more than three go for the hands. Although I doubt most people in that situation would be given a choice as to how to minimise their pain.
In terms of my childhood experience, I remember thinking that it wasn’t too bad after the first stroke of the cane on my bottom although it really started to hurt by the third stroke which is when I earned the extras by standing up and trying to argue that it should stop now because it was hurting too much and I couldn’t deal with it. When I got the first stroke on my hand, the pain was instantly vicious. I didn’t want to put out my other hand and only did so when I was told that I could get three on each hand instead of one on each hand if I didn’t and I just couldn’t deal with that idea at all.

I’ve never been caned on the hand or the bottom, but instinctively I think I’d agree that a cane stroke on the hand would hurt more.
I imagine your hand goes numb after fewer strokes because the hand is a relatively small target area, so presumably the cane strokes all have to land pretty much on the same spot. Whereas when you’re caned on the bottom, there’s more room to spread the strokes out so that each stroke can land on a different spot and add a new line of pain. Does that seem reasonable?
In your experience, whereabouts on the bottom does a cane stroke hurt the most – across the middle part, across the lower part or right in the crease between the buttocks and thighs? And do you ever get caned across the tops of the thighs, below the crease – if so, how does that compare for pain?

Hi Keith,
Good questions. I think you’re probably right about the target area issue. When I’ve been caned on the hands, in most cases, all strokes get aimed at the palm – I won’t be caned deliberately on the fingers although it does happen my accident sometimes. There’s not a lot of space there and overlap happens a lot. When I am caned on the bottom, the strokes tend to be spread out – most people aren’t that accurate, and even when they are, most prefer to spread things out, although I have sometimes been quite deliberately caned by people who were trying to land every stroke in the same place, or get other forms of deliberate overlap, I haven’t done that often enough to really say if it numbs quicker.
I find a cane stroke most painful if it’s in the lower half of the bottom. The sting seems much more intense. I’ve never really found the crease area to be more sensitive although I’ve been told it is, but I do tend to feel strokes there for a few days. I’ve never been deliberately caned on the thighs but when it has happened by accident it always seems to hurt a lot but I’m not sure that isn’t because of the shock of a stroke landing where I wasn’t expecting it.

Hi Jerry
Thanks for your response.
With regard to overlapping strokes, have you had a caning where the last few strokes were aimed to cross over some of the preceding strokes? I’ve read in various places on the internet that, where the strokes intersect, this is really painful and the marks at those points remain for much longer. I was wondering what your experience of that has been.
I find a cane stroke most painful if it’s in the lower half of the bottom. The sting seems much more intense. I’ve never really found the crease area to be more sensitive although I’ve been told it is, but I do tend to feel strokes there for a few days.
I think most people seem to find that strokes on the lower part of the bottom are more painful. If you get a stroke in the crease, I suppose the welt there would be irritated when you are walking as the crease on each side becomes more pronounced. That might explain why you feel the after-effects there for a few days.
I’ve never been deliberately caned on the thighs but when it has happened by accident it always seems to hurt a lot but I’m not sure that isn’t because of the shock of a stroke landing where I wasn’t expecting it.
I’ve also read that marks on the thighs last a lot longer than on the buttocks, as there is less fleshy “padding” there. Is that your experience?
BTW, when I said in an earlier post that I’d never been caned, I was referring to my schooldays. Like you, I have been caned a few times consensually as an adult, although the lady I visited never caned me quite as hard as I really wanted. Unfortunately, a medical condition has now prevented me from pursuing this any further.

Many thanks for your participation. I will reply to this post myself with the details of the CP I received.
Note: I see no reason why schools should not be named as they were operating completely within the law.
Hello Another_Lurker,
I have only just started writing here, any previous Jerry is somebody else. You ask why I would have liked to have seen the girl slippered. There’s a few answers to that. At the time I would have said it was because I found the idea interesting. There was quite a lot of debate among all of us as to whether or not girls really got punished as severely as boys. Sexual equality was something that the school talked about a lot but we sometimes felt didn’t really mean as much in practice as they said in a wide range of areas. This girl, in particular, used to go out of her way to prove she was the equal of any boy and I also would have quite liked to see her brought down a peg or two – I don’t think I was actually particularly sexist and she used to get on my nerves by constantly assuming we all were. But I also think I found the idea a bit exciting even though I really didn’t understand that at that stage.
I think they went out of their way to make a ritual of caning at my school. It was a pretty ritualised experience in a number of different ways, very formal. But I don’t think requiring me to show my underwear was really part of any ritual, as opposed to being done simply because it was considered necessary because somebody else had tried to avoid the full effect of their punishment. Because the cane was only used in very serious cases, most of the time people had warning that they might get it – for example, I knew it was possible the day before it happened. People could take precautions if they wanted to. It was really quite straightforward – I was told that they needed to check I hadn’t tried to protect myself because somebody had in the past and was told to just briefly lower my trousers so the teacher could have a quick look. It took only a few seconds. The lady teacher was present – she offered to leave the room, but the other teacher asked her to stay and she did. I did find it a bit embarrassing, but it wasn’t that bad. I would have been mortified to have been fully exposed in front of her, but her seeing my pants wasn’t that bad. I was actually more embarrassed by being asked if I needed to go to the toilet which also happened about the same time.
My later experiences with caning and other forms of corporal punishment started when I was at university. It really was very unusual at that time for somebody my age to have been caned and I enjoyed talking about it and a lot of people had questions about it. That got me connected with somebody who enjoyed administering corporal punishment and he managed to persuade me that I might find it enjoyable to be caned if I let him try. I didn’t and don’t really enjoy the experience at the time, but I found that the aftermath could be exhilarating. I get the same type of experience from heavy exercise – the “runners high”, the endorphin release – and from vigorous massage but it takes longer in both of those cases. It isn’t sexual for me, but it certainly is for some people I’ve been involved with and I don’t judge on that basis. Looking back to my punishments at school and childhood punishments at home, I’m pretty sure I had the same experience then as well, but it didn’t stop the punishments working. I hated them at the time but I felt much better soon afterwards on all sorts of levels. But experiencing it as an adult isn’t the same as it was as a child, because one of the worst aspects of being punished as a child isn’t present – the feeling of being powerless and having no control or rights. Somebody else had decided to hurt me and I had to just put up with it. I’ve been involved in discussions with some other people as to how you could replicate that in adult life and for the life of me I can’t understand why you would want to.
I don’t do this all that often – about once a month or so. At times I’ve experimented with doing it more often but it just doesn’t work as well. The pay off is greatly reduced if it happens too often.
Girls were slippered on, as far as I could tell, about the same terms as boys. I don’t think it happened as often but I don’t think girls as a group were as badly behaved as the boys but it is hard to know for sure as slipperings were not really publicised. It wasn’t rare for junior students – 11 and 12 year olds, even 13 year olds, but it wasn’t common either and it declined sharply after that. When this happened to us, we were 14, getting towards 15, and it was rare at that age. I think the reason I got it was a combination of the fact that giving me a detention would have put something on record that was similar enough to my previous crime that the consequences could have been very serious, it could have even put me at risk of expulsion again (and I suppose, also the risk of another caning instead), and the fact that the teacher had seen my response to the cane and felt that corporal punishment was something that actually had a good chance of working on me. I’m afraid I wasn’t at all brave about being caned. I don’t think we were really expected to be but if my school had had some sort of code that boys didn’t cry and took their punishment bravely, I would have broken that code into little pieces. She deliberately set out to make me cry which is why I got so many whacks because she didn’t stop until she thought she’d made her impression. On the other hand, the girl wasn’t in anywhere near as much trouble as I was. She didn’t have the history that put her at risk, and I think that’s why the teacher didn’t initially decide to slipper her. But when she asked for it, instead, I don’t think the teacher saw any good reason not to honour that request.
I think a girl with the same history as me, would have been punished in the same way as I was. I don’t have any reason to doubt it.
Girls got caned on the same terms boys did – as an alternative to expulsion, if they decided to give you a second chance. I do wonder if girls might have been offered more of a choice in such a case than I was. The headmistress told me I could expel you but instead I have decided you will get the cane. I was never offered a choice. A woman who I know was caned says she was offered the actual choice. That could have been for some other reason than sexual differences, of course, but it was different. But it is only comparing two cases. And boys got caned more often than girls, at least based on cases I know about – and as far as I know it was always public knowledge when somebody was caned because it was intended a deterrent in addition to everything else – the year I was caned, I think about six to eight boys got it, but only two girls did. Girls were also caned by the Headmistress herself, while boys were caned by the Master in charge of the Arts department who supposedly had the job because he was an expert at caning. He was one of the oldest members of staff and had probably been doing it since it was common. The slipper could be given by teachers of the opposite sex but there seemed to be a rule or least it was accepted practice that the cane wouldn’t be. As the Headmistress might have had less experience, maybe the girls did get off a little bit lighter. From my later experiences, I would say that the Music teacher was a genuine expert who knew exactly what he was doing. I’ve often wondered what he thought about doing it. In my other encounters with him before and after, he always struck me as a very civilised and gentle man, but that day, he was stern, rigid, bordering on cruel. I can understand he had to do the job properly but I still have qualms about those two extra strokes on my hands and the way he threatened me with even more.
