Corporal punishment surveyHi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.
Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.
School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.
If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.
Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. If you have (as indeed have I) I’d be very grateful if you’d reply to this post giving as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with. However to keep this thread out of the realm of fantasy, I’d ask that you only post facts, and leave the creative writing and long discussions to other forums.
The information I’d love you to provide is the following:
About You:

Approximate age when punished:
Approximate year of punishment:
Crime committed or alleged:About the punishment

Gender of staff member:

Were you ever punished again for the same offence?:
Do you consider the punishment effective?:Any other relevant info:
Many thanks for your participation. I will reply to this post myself with the details of the CP I received.
Note: I see no reason why schools should not be named as they were operating completely within the law.
Hello Sarafina,
Thanks for your response. It’s quite a coincidence that three contributors to this thread attended the same school.
I noticed that at least one of the canings described by Rebecca and DianeW were administered over just the knickers with the skirt lifted out of the way, possibly to emphasise the seriousness of the offence concerned. Although your offence could have been considered quite a serious one, perhaps you avoided it because it was your first (and, as it turned out, your only) caning. BTW, were you in tears after your caning, or did you manage to take it stoically?
Did any of your friends at the school get caned?

Hello Sarafina
Thank you for your post and comments.
Did you tell the Head what the workman said? If so was any action taken? Do you have any idea who reported you, and if so did they tell the whole story?

Hi Sarafina
Your punishment does seem harsh for your “first offence” especially as you seem to have been provoked. The head does not appear to have taken the workman’s comments and your hitherto unblemished record into account.
I would have thought a slippering would have been the maximum punishment you should have received – was the slipper widely used for less serious offences?

Hello,
To answer you all in one go-
Keith-I did cry as that was the most painful experience I had ever encountered. I was grateful for the 3 layers of protection I had on. The skirt was reasonably thick and if it had been removed and I was caned over just tights and knickers which were made of a less thick material that would have made it worse.
A couple of my friends one of whom was well behaved as well did receive the cane as well as me although we did not really discuss it much.
Oliver- I don’t know who ‘grassed’ me up. I suggest it was the workman telling one of the teachers who then told the Head. The workman no doubt just told of the comment I made. I did explain to the Head the comment that the workman had made to me and the Head said I should have ignored him and told someone what he had said so he could be dealt with by his bosses. Instead I made the situation worse by responding and getting myself into trouble.
Rickie-Don’t they say that it is the retaliator who always gets in trouble? The Head took the view that I had been ‘rude’ to someone who was a ‘guest’ at the school so in her eyes I was the real culprit. The slipper could be used by any teacher but did not seem to be used at all as all offences were reported to the Head who had such power and her decision seem to be to give the cane as a deterrent to future bad behaviour.

It’s interesting that you found the caning so very painful even though your skirt was reasonably thick and you also had your tights and knickers underneath. Earlier in this thread, I was discussing the effectiveness of applying the cane through a skirt. My theory was that, if a girl is bending over, the skirt would not be tight against the lower part of her bottom – there would be a slight air gap, which would impede the action of a cane stroke aimed to the lower bottom (which is where it hurts most!). So I was arguing that the target area would, in effect, be limited to the middle part of the bottom. My fellow contributors were not convinced by this theory, and your experience tends to support their view. But can you remember whether any of the three strokes you received were low down on your “sit-spot”, or were they all higher up?

Hello Keith,
All I remember is that it hurt a lot and as it was the first time I had been hit with a cane it was bound to make me cry. Sorry if this does not really answer your question. All seems a bit too scientific for a then 14 year old girl to get her head around and analyse where the strokes struck me. Sorry again,

Several contributors on here have referred to being punished back in the 1960s with a bat.My query is very simple – Was that lawful? ie was it authorised corporal punishment? If the answer proved to be ‘no’ then those who were victims could – had they but known it at the time – have pursued an action for common assault.

Hello Sarafina and Justin,
Perhaps I can respond to both of you:
Sarafina – don’t worry, I should be the one to apologise for being over-analytical! I’ve just been a bit surprised at how many girls seem to have been caned over their skirts, although I suppose it was only fair that they should have had the equivalent amount of “protection” as boys being caned over trousers.
Justin – you raise an interesting question. Of course attitudes to corporal punishment were very different in the 60’s, and I doubt whether the mere fact that an “unusual” spanking implement was used would have made a difference legally. I think the only legal issue would have been whether the punishment was considered excessive to the point of amounting to an assault. I the case I mentioned, the boy got only one whack, albeit a hard one, with the cricket bat, so I don’t think that would have qualified as excessive.

Hello Rickie,
Just to add I agree that it was very harsh in my mind as well that I got the cane seeing as I was not a serial offender. However if you were rude to a teacher you could be caned for that and seeing as I was rude to a ‘visitor’ to the school that was considered to be in the Heads mind an offence worthy of the cane.
