Corporal punishment surveyHi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.
Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.
School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.
If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.
Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. If you have (as indeed have I) I’d be very grateful if you’d reply to this post giving as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with. However to keep this thread out of the realm of fantasy, I’d ask that you only post facts, and leave the creative writing and long discussions to other forums.
The information I’d love you to provide is the following:

Hello Sarafina,
You say that you got the junior cane as you were in the third year. Do you know from what year the senior cane was used?
I wonder how much difference there was between the junior and senior canes. I bet you were glad (or maybe relieved is the word) that you only got the junior cane!
As the cane was used quite often in your school, did you ever notice the cane stripes on other girls’ bottoms in the changing rooms or showers when you had PE/games lessons? I suppose most girls would have been embarrassed at having their marks seen, but did any girls actually seem to enjoy showing off their marks after they’d been caned?

Hi Rickie and Sarafina
We had senior and junior canes at my school as well.
The junior cane was thin and whippy and a very light brown colour. It did have a crook handle. The head had it in his hand when I went in for my only taste of the cane and it is fixed in my memory! It certainly stung and I was left with a red stripe across my bottom.
As far as I know the senior cane was much thicker and gave a duller pain but considerable bruising. Like you Sarafina, I am relieved that I did not experience it!
I cannot remember at what age the senior cane replaced the junior cane but it was probably about the age of 14.

Hello Keith,
The senior cane was used on girls in the 4th year and upwards.I believe from what I have been told there was a difference in thickness between the 2 although I can’t verify this personally as I never experienced the senior cane. The junior version was somewhat thin and whippy. I certainly am grateful I only experienced the cane once but wish that I had not experienced it at all.
As for your other point I did not really notice any marks on any other girls in the changing rooms. I tended not to look in that direction if at all possible. Instead I became very acquainted with how my feet looked as that was where my gaze usually was aimed towards the floor.

Hello scriptorium1541,
I do agree with your comments now although at the time I felt I was harshly treated. Let us just say that the remark I made was not very ‘ladylike’ but equally the workmans comment was not very ‘gentlemanly’ either. I should of course turned the other cheek but as I did not it was my bottom cheeks that became very sore.

Yes, I’ve seen a number of articles on the internet about the difference in the pain level between junior and senior canes. It does seem that the thinner junior canes gave a sharper and more intense sting at the time. To my mind, the worst part of any spanking or caning would be the pain felt at the time rather than the after-effects. You both said you were relieved that you didn’t experience the senior cane, but I honestly think I would have preferred to be caned with a thicker senior cane and accept the likelihood of some bruising and a longer lingering soreness afterwards if it was less painful at the time.

It seems you were just very unlucky to be caught for your one infringement which resulted in your ‘audience’ with your Headmistress. How did the workman come to know your name to report you? Was someone nearby to ask so he could identify you to the authorities otherwise you would have simply been one of numerous girls passing by. Did your parents feel your punishment was justified and did they think of taking any action?
As for the pain felt from a so-called junior or senor cane this would depend on two things, what you were wearing at the time and the force applied by the person administering the punishment, not necessarily the cane itself. After all if the teacher or Headmistress in your case, intended it to cause intense pain they could simply apply more force. Normally a teacher applying corporal punishment would have done so to make the pupil realise rules had been broken or that behaviour was below expectation. Any feeling or inclination for the teacher to extract revenge which could be interpreted as sadistic was and is totally unacceptable, indeed should have resulted in legal proceedings. Fortunately most teachers using the cane or slipper meant it to act as a salutary lesson which would cause initial pain or intense stinging; the intention to cause long lasting bruising was totally wrong.
As you said you were caned over your skirt so had three layers on; perhaps the worst time is summer when you could have been in a thin summer dress and even without tights on a hot day; by the 1970s slips were rarely worn so in effect creating an addition layer. Skirts are sometimes lined so could lessen the impact but as I said, if the administrator is intent on causing pain they can do so by applying extra pressure over any layers.

Hello Brad,
Thanks for your post, and welcome to the forum.
Back in the 70’s, was it considered unusual for a student of 18 to be paddled or was paddling accepted as a possible punishment whatever the student’s age? And what about girls at your school – were they equally liable to be paddled even at 18?
What sort of paddle was used on you – was it the full-sized “Board of Education” type of paddle or a smaller one?
