Do you consider the punishment effective?: Not really – this was the first of many.  Like many others, I considered physical punishment as an occupational hazard of being a schoolboy

Any other relevant info: This was my first in secondary school.  Although I had been spanked before at home, and at junior school, these were quite hard whacks, and I was surprised how much it hurt.
As I was the first in my class to receive such punishment, I also received another stroke of the slipper the next day from my form teacher for letting the side down.

Not too many UK people here at present. I see you were slippered early on in secondary school. I felt the slipper and cane in senior school but that was in the late 1950s into the mid 1960s. At least we all risked the same punishment in school back then. Of course home punishments varied family to family. Some parents used no spanking at all and some whacked harder than in school and often across the bare bottom at home. All a thing of the past now of course.

May I please join six of the best in saying a personal welcome to the Forum.  Congratulations on making an excellent contribution so early in your career here.  If only more people would do so!  I hope that you will find much here to interest you and that we shall hear more from you.

You mention this thread being quite old.  Many threads here (there are currently 3510 of them) do not remain active for very long, as is often the case in this type of Forum.  However any thread can be reopened at any time if a contributor finds that it is an appropriate vehicle for what they wish to say.  The Forum was founded in 2002 and a few threads from the very early days seem to have a charmed life and make occasional reappearances over the years.

On a lighter note:  I scan the new members list from time to time in search of candidates for my occasional posts on naughty avatars.  I had high hopes when I first caught a glimpse of yours, but alas the big picture indicated that a visit to Specsavers may need to be imminent.

I totally agree with A_L. At present without contributions from the US we would be in a sorry state. There have been many fine UK contributions over the years but we seem to be going through a thin patch recently.
Admittedly all SCP in the UK has now become historic, It was over 20 years ago when the final tiny minority of private schools ceased to use CP due to the complete UK ban on it in all UK schools. By this time the great majority of UK parents were in favour this.

Parental discipline, always a delicate subject in the light of anything might be seen as abuse and even common assault by the new millennium. Many of us older folk here will remember when it commonplace in households. I am sure most sensible folk will agree that the proposed ban on even the most mild family discipline is a good thing as it will protect all youngsters. That said we sadly still hear of domestic abuse involving adults and children.

Accounts of UK SCP seen here are all over 20 years old and the massive majority relate to SCP of some 40 or 50 years ago. I see no reason why such correspondence should not continue provided it is seen as history. As we have seen over the past few months there are many lessons that can be learnt from the past.

 

Hi everyone, I am new here too.  So, I thought I’d post one of my experiences from my school days.  I’ve provided a little more detail about the actual punishment itself.  If that’s not appropriate for this forum please let me know.

Background
I attended an all-boys school in Australia in the 1970’s.  Corporal punishment was widely used at this school.  The teachers were provided with a strap that measured around 40 cm long, 3cm wide and 2cm thick.  Both ends were rounded, and it was made of dense rubber and was quite stiff – bending only slightly.  The top and bottom were polished, and it was a black in colour.  Some teachers had other straps that were made of leather and were more flexible, but the vast majority were the standard issue ones.  Punishment was almost always given on the hands.

So with that said, here is my contribution.

Do you consider the punishment effective?: Well, it was effective in that it stung like hell, but was it effective in preventing the same misdemeanor in the future ?  No.

I was no stranger to the strap.  I’d had it before, and I’d get it many more times before I left the school.  On this occasion, we’d been given a math’s test.    I did not study for the test, and I knew my marks wouldn’t be good.  The teacher had the scores and was reading them to the class.  He called each student’s name, followed by the mark.  When he got to my name, after saying my name he just said “Out the front”.

I made my way out to the front of the class and stood to the side of the room as he read through the rest of the names.  After he finished, I watched him go back to his desk and my stomach sunk when he opened the drawer and pulled out his strap.  I was the only one called to the front of the class.

He walked over to me and stood opposite me.  He told me my marks weren’t good enough and that I was going to be punished.  He held the strap out in front of me, waving it up and down slightly.  This was the dreaded “Hands out” signal.  I quickly wiped my palms on the side of my trousers and then held my hands out – left over right – palms flat, thumbs and fingers together.  He put the strap underneath my bottom hand and used it to push my hands up until they were at the required height (the strap was fairly stiff and didn’t really bend much so was often used in this way).  Satisfied, he lay the strap lengthways along my hand so the rounded end rested on the part of the palm below the fingers.  He then tapped the strap firmly a couple of times taking aim, and then raised it slowly high in the air until it was slightly over his shoulder.  After a brief pause, he swung the strap down hard slicing through my hands with a loud cracking sound that was followed a split second later with a searing pain.  I pulled my hands away and shook them furiously to try and ease the burning, intensifying sting to no avail.  I clasped my hands together to try and ease the sting.

A moment later I heard “Other hand” and after a few moments  I reluctantly held my good hand out supported by the hurt one.  The strap was used again to adjust the position of my hands until they were suitable, and after a few aiming taps the strap was slowly raised up again.  I recall seeing his face which was a focus of concentration on my hands as he swung the strap down again for another cracking stroke.

Again, I pulled my hands away and put them under my opposite armpits to try and ease the burning pain  I also tried to prevent any tears from forming as the whole class was watching and I knew how people who cried when strapped would be treated.

You could get anywhere from 1 to 6 strokes so I really hoped that would be it.  Fortunately for me, I was told to sit down so walked slowly back to my seat without establishing eye contact with anyone.  My hands were red and sore for an hour before things started to get back to normal.

Welcome! Aa new friend to the SCP site!  Was your school a Roman Catholic one? It was the RC schools in the UK that most used straps. Rubber straps were also used in many Canadian schools in the past too.
Had most Aussie parents stopped using spanking at home by then? I think a good number of UK ones had by then but some still used it.
