Yes, thanks Another Lurker, very good. I’ve just read the biography of the South African rugby union player Joost van der Westhuizen who sadly died a few years ago, far too young, from motor neurone disease.  He was their scrum half when they won the Rugby World Cup in 1995. He was raised on a farm and typical punishments were beltings in the barn from his dad. No mention of his schooldays, but I think the cane was still in regular use in those days! His initiation into the South African national team was rather painful! He had to stand on a chair and drink a pint of beer. Then the whole touring party took it in turns to smack the left cheek of his bum with their hands! 30 of them! But because he got part of the ritual wrong he he got 2 more rounds, making 90 smacks in all! They changed the ritual to 3 strokes of a cane after that tour as the manager thought it was a bit severe!

Hello lansallos and Andrewmoon,

No problem.  I was glad to see lansallos‘s request as I like to do something useful and build up a bit of a credit balance against those times when even our long-suffering  Forum Management are a bit irked by my excess levity!

For the benefit of anyone who encounters a relevant YouTube clip but doesn’t know how to post it, on most systems the process is very easy on Tapatalk:

Start to play the video on YouTube and either:

  1. If it’s a fairly short clip like the above,  right mouse click in the video screen area then left mouse click on ‘Copy video URL‘ or
  2. If it’s a lengthy clip and the bit you want occurs part way through play up to the relevant start point, pause the video , right mouse click in the video screen area then left mouse click on ‘Copy video URL at current time‘.

In the Tapatalk thread response window left mouse click to establish your cursor where you want the video to appear.

Hold down the Ctrl key, click on the v key and release the Ctrl key.

Voila!  The relevant video URL will appear!

In your contribution this will appear as a ready to play YouTube window.

Sounds much more complicated than it actually is!

Thanks again, AL for the tutorial. I have sqirrelled it away for future reference.

I should have said that I think Paul may have given the story wings.  I have a vague memory of Harrison telling the story himself and his version was that his father told the teacher if he did it again he would knock his expletive deleted head off. But I like Paul’s version better!

In June 1883 Stanley Baldwin (Prime minister 1923, 1924-29 & 1935-37) was flogged by the headmaster at Harrow
School for writing pornography and posting a copy to his cousin at Eton (thereby bringing the school into disrepute).
His father was summoned to the school to be warned of his son’s moral wickedness. No details of the actual flogging
available.

Ah, good old ‘bringing the school into disrepute’!

At my own alma mater burn the place down. murder a Master or two and you’d probably get away with at worst being caned by the Prefects.  But bring the school into disrepute and that was a visit to the Headmaster every time without fail.

To bring this topic to the top of the list … and update:
Prince Charles – apart from being caned at school, he was also slipepred with both a carpet sliper and tennis shoe by his father.
Dae earnhardt jr – mentions getting the belt from his dad.
So not “at school”, but hopefully interesting anyways.

Anyone else have any updates?

David Niven in his autobiography “The Moons a Balloon” describes how he had a good relationship with a new headmaster. Didn’t stop him getting twelve strokes of the cane from him for cheating in an exam. Amazing life story as well.

I have read that account, and agree with you that he had an amazing life. the twelve strokes were described as pretty painful though – not such a good point in his life!

No-one else heard or read any other accounts recently?
