A_L: my comments are based on my own childhood experiences. I certainly never knew of any male school teachers spanking or caning girls. In fact I knew virtually nothing of girls receiving CP in schools back then, 1950s/60s. In my infants school, 5 – 7 year olds, all the teachers were female and they slapped the back of legs of both boys and girls alike. Somehow I was aware that girls could be caned across their hands in some senior schools. The local girls senior school was all lady teachers.
Back then plenty of parents gave spankings. It varied greatly family to family. I knew my aunt used to spank my girl cousins. I was spanked by my mother up to about 11 when I went to senior school. I was slippered a few times by an uncle (real uncle, my late dad’s brother) on my mum’s behalf. He was a nice person, took me fishing and to watch football matches, things like that. However if I really played my mum up he’d punish me on her behalf. It hurt but I realised that I deserved even then.

Hi – After attending a school were girls were exempt from CP although it was never confirmed, it comes as a pleasant surprise that the gentle sex were corporally punished by both male and female teachers at numerous other schools across the country. Although I never experienced any girl being punished at my secondary school,my elder sister did tell me that she saw a lone plimsoll in the p.e mistresses cupboard, why only one. It may have been there for quite a few years perhaps girls were subject to the the whack of the plimsoll a long time before I attended this school.I am looking forward to the rest of the Northwest findings to see if my school is mentioned

Oh dear, can I really have gone over 5 days before responding to your contribution #131 above!  Please accept my apologies.  By nature I am lazy and in general respond only to pressure.  There’s precious little of that here these days as compared to those happy, happy days of yesteryear when there might be 30 contributions in a day and I could have half a dozen interesting arguments discussions going on simultaneously.  Gone alas, almost certainly for ever!

There has been recent discussion in this thread of both male teachers flagellating female pupils in secondary schools and female teachers dealing with male pupils likewise.   I infer from your contributions on both that based on your own experience you are not convinced that either was other than a rarity.  That is a perfectly reasonable position to take if you wish to consider your own experience paramount but I think it entails disregarding the vast diversity of SCP regimes in England due to multiple types of school, variety of regulatory bodies, differing parental expectations and local customs, and other influences.

We both attended all-male secondary schools so we certainly didn’t see secondary girls being corporeally punished by male teachers in our own secondary school days because there weren’t any secondary girls present.  In my secondary school there were absolutely no female staff concerned in any way with teaching or discipline, so I never saw secondary boys corporeally punished by female teachers either.  Indeed the most direct contact I can claim with either is that I am as convinced as I can be that as a junior schoolboy I saw girls from the associated senior school waiting to be caned by the headmaster, and have been told at both first and second hand that such canings were administered on the bottom.

But despite this lack of personal experience I don’t doubt that within living memory in England appreciable numbers of secondary schoolgirls were whacked on the bottom by male teachers and ditto secondary boys by female teachers.  In both cases the weight of claims  from a variety of sources is just too great to ignore   It is also worthy of note that in some countries where SCP in the form of classroom punishments survived into the era of almost universal usage by secondary school pupils of mobile phones which lent themselves to surreptitiously shot videos of said classroom punishments there is ample evidence of every gender combination of bottom whacking.  Some UK aficionados of SCP practices tend to ignore or denigrate happenings abroad on a ‘not invented here’ basis, and good luck to them, but as far as I’m concerned it’s all evidence of sorts.

I didn’t join in your discussion of parental or in-family corporal punishment deliberately.  The reason is that whereas I have no great misgivings about SCP as it used to operate, although I certainly wouldn’t wish to see it return, I have never been totally happy about parental CP.  If little Johnny or little Jane persist in running into busy roads and the only thing which checks and eventually eliminates this dangerous habit is a hard and immediate smack on the bottom then so be it.  But the formal variety, of the “I shall beat you on my return tonight because because you  ……” or even slightly less formal manifestations, no I’m not at all happy!

The reason for this is that I hold it as an absolute element of humanity that every child is entitled to, and should have, at least one, and preferably two parents or parental substitutes who love it unstintingly and provide it with continuous kindness and succor in adversity until it can stand on its own two feet.  And I don’t see corporal punishment as consistent with that.  So how do I accept that SCP was ok?  Well let us consider the police and the judiciary.  Their job is not to love you unstintingly but to keep you as safe from harm as can be arranged within their resources.  But if you yourself cause harm then their job is to ensure that you are apprehended and punished.

And so it was with teachers in the days of SCP.  Their job wasn’t to love and succor school children in adversity, though some of them did exactly that when parents failed.  Their job was to educate children, and if children resisted or interferred with the educational process of themselves or others then punishment was appropriate.  In the days of large classes, limited classroom assistance and fairly general parental approval of SCP, then SCP fitted that requirement.  Now the educational and social environments are very different and I no longer see SCP as appropriate which is why I don’t want to see it return.

As I’ve mentioned before, I attended a primary school in what was then the borough of Willesden in Middlesex (now Brent in Greater London), 1954–57 in the infants school and 1957–61 in the junior school.

The junior school had two classes in each year, so there were eight classes in all, and each class had a class teacher who would normally take all the lessons. I imagine that meant that there were eight teachers altogether at any given time, together with the headmistress.

My recollection is that most of the teachers were female, though I remember two permanent male teachers and a couple of temporary ones.

The majority of the teachers would use corporal punishment in class for misbehaviour or disobedience, though some used it much more rarely than others. I don’t know of any female teacher taking a boy to a male teacher for punishment.

As I’ve mentioned on numerous occasions, our class teacher in the first term of junior school (when we were aged seven or eight) was a lady from New Zealand called Miss Ward. Any boy caught misbehaving, and that included minor misdemeanours such as talking in class, would would be given corporal punishment. He would be told to come out to the front of the class and bend over the seat of a chair so that his trousers were stretched tight. Miss Ward would then take her slipper (a white plimsoll) out of her desk drawer, lift it to shoulder height, and then bring it down once on the boy’s bottom. The recipient would then have to return to his desk. The punishment was immediate and public. Some boys would be crying quietly for a minute or two after having been slippered, but others would manage to retain their composure.

All this was absolutely commonplace. Boys knew that if they were caught then they would be slippered and that it would hurt, but that the pain would subside after a while. Some boys, probably the more naughty ones, were proud of having been slippered — they could “take it”. It didn’t occur to anyone to remark that they’d been slippered on the bottom by a woman.

It was a bit different on the one occasion that Miss Ward slippered a girl, as I’ve recounted several times. For most of the class, it would have been the first time they’d realised that girls could be given corporal punishment in school. And it was a theatrical performance. To start with, Barbara didn’t bend over very far, and despite a further instruction she needed a guiding hand to put her in the correct position. And then her skirt was too loose and heavy, so it had to be lifted out of the way. For the other girls in the class, it was a warning; for the boys, it was memorable. For Barbara it was painful at the time, but a few years later she was able to boast about it like some of the boys did.

I only got smacked once in Junior School, a few slaps to the back of my legs, 100% deserved. When you get told at morning break not to do something, and you do the self-same thing during afternoon break, there is not much wriggle room! But being kept in at all break times for the next week was much more upsetting.

i do vaguely remember one slightly surprising and isolated incident. One of my more casual friends received two strokes of the cane across his hands by a male teacher. Now the boy was a totally pleasant and unassuming lad, rather weak, and the master was one of the nicest guys you could meet, never even raised his voice normally and liked by everyone. i have no idea now what the boy did, but all his friends agreed at the time that the caning was completely wrong, unfair and uncalled for. As my interest in cp was already awakening, it didn’t stop me getting a red crayon and pencilling two lines across my hands. I don’t think I actually showed anybody, but imagined what real marks would have felt like! I certainly had no intention of finding out.

Although there are quite a few variations the great majority of punishments for girls back then were across the hands by female teachers.

A few items in particular caught my eye:

Julie – b1966 – Cane across unspecified anatomy by male teacher (at her father’s request) – 1977 to 1982

This reinforces my memories and thoughts that plenty of girls were spanked at home and that many received school corporal punishment. Back then the majority of parents approved or at least accepted that their youngsters might be caned, strapped or slippered in school. I speak of the 1950s into 1960s when I was in full time education, over half a century ago – different times!

Welcome back.  You have been very sadly missed.  A truly prodigious contribution to mark your return!

And some entries stand out from the crowd.  I am not going to say that canings of girls on the bare bottom at English schools are rarer than the fabled hen’s teeth.  There is at least one such account here in which I have considerable faith.  And of course one lady now in very high places indeed has been reported in a biography as receiving such a punishment at elementary school.  It may be the prep or primary designation which gives us the clue to Cathy, caned across the bare bottom  in the (presumably) primary section of St Gabriel’s Prep School. Lytham St Annes in 1962.  Cathy was around around age six according to the dates given.

Prep schools, especially the boarding variety, were notorious for caning boys on the bare, and indeed the case here that I mentioned above involved both a boy and a girl  at a boarding prep school, but they were around twice Cathy’s age.  I think Cathy may have suffered from the rather lax attitude to the punishment of elementary age children.

We also have the T-square wielding male teacher(s) at Ribbleton Hall Secondary, Preston.  Mainly on the bottom, but on one occasion on the hand.  Now a full size T-square is a pretty unwieldy implement to deploy in punitive mode even on a suitably presented bottom.  But on the hand ……………..  The mind boggles!  In fact there was quite some choice of punitive implements for girls at Ribbleton Halll.   As well as the cane, the slipper and the T-square they could encounter bunsen burner tubing across the legs and also a ‘strip of rubber’ (which may of  course have been bunsen burner tubing.   Variety is the spice of life, or so ’tis said, especially if you’re a schoolgirl being whacked!

A_L: As a youngster I was unaware of the term ‘prep school’ except in a few books that I read. As an adult I learnt more of the top end of the private education system. I believe that ‘kindergarten’ was the title for first schools for youngsters. However I am unsure if there were any other schools prior to prep school. Prep being short for a preparatory school, the name for a school that prepared youngsters for public or private schools. The age ranges for private education in the past tended to be 8 – 13 for prep school with the move then to public/private schools, particularly for boarders.

My knowledge of the private section of 1950s/60s education came for comics and books of the time notably Billy Bunter at Greyfriars School. Bunter had a sister Bessie, at a girls’ boarding school. There was never any great mention of her and certainly not of her receiving CP.
I worked with a guy who had been through this private system at the time when I was in the state school system. I also had a friend of the same age who attended a very well known public school in the British Midlands. Both mentioned the cane at their public schools.

My wife was recently sent a copy of ‘Terms and Conditions, Life in Girls’ Boarding Schools, 1939 – 1979.” by one of her sisters. My wife and her sisters had been day girls in a convent school in the 1960s. Most of the girls there were boarders. I am assured that their school used no CP on either boarders or day girls.
There is only one mention of CP in the book. Apparently three girls of about 12/13 decided once to run away. A silly prank really as they took nothing more than the clothes they were wearing. After a few miles they arrived at the parents’ home of one of the girls’ friends. They were taken in and fed. Then the school was told they were safe and sound. Soon afterwards the girls were collected and taken back to school. It seems that the three were kept apart from the other girls  that evening. Next day one  of girls, when asked by the other girls, what had happened turned around and eased her school knickers down to display the marks from five strokes of the cane. The girl in question is now a mature titled lady!
