A_L: I’d not seen the previous thread. I was intrigued that the book was actually sent to my wife by one of her sisters. As I previously said their private convent school used no CP in the 1960s. Her younger sister transferred to the local grammar school in around 1968 as many of her friends went there and with a big family move planned a grammar school to grammar school seemed to be sensible. The middle sister moved to the new grammar school’s sixth form too. All much to their father’s delight as up to then he’d been paying three lots of school fees! The youngest sister’s first grammar school was mixed and she was bit shocked when one of the boys she knew was caned. She was only there for a few terms before the family moved to another part of the country. The new grammar school was girls only which met with the mother’s approval!

Excellent stuff. Again many thanks for all your hard work.  Currently you are the mainstay of the forum.

Another Lurker  has already raised  queries which also caught my eye and I am sure everybody is looking forward to your additional details.

Whilst the inference is that   hand caning is prevalent,  it is   interesting   to note that at some schools both the bottom and hand were permitted targets.

The use of a hairbrush at Walton Le Dale is also interesting since this is not usually an approved implement by many school authorities. It can cause severe bruising .

I also note that the only CP noted at Walshaw (Secondary) is at school camp.  It has been noted in these pages before that strange things happen at school camp.

The use of the hairbrush at Walton le Dale is both interesting and surprising. It must be a rare occurrence, but I’m sure an effective one. I would have thought the best and most common way to administer it would be OTK, I’ve not heard of a brush, hair, bath or clothes, being used any other way. John Guise of Helston would have approved!! I wonder if I Researcher has any more details in that regard.

I’m glad you picked up on the punished at school/punished at home cases as I put them in specially for you.

Regarding Fern’s punishment at Pleckgate she stated:

‘I only ever got the cane on the hand…Im glad,cause my backside was black,blue and cut from the belt off my step-dad’

What is also interesting is that she further stated in another thread:

‘I got 3 whacks of the cane on each hand,then the week later had to go back for another 6..my dad was gonna kill him..’

If her dad was angered about her getting the cane on her hand from a male teacher I wonder what he would thought about her getting belt on her bottom off her step-dad?

Whilst at Shadsworth Julie recalled:

‘I knocked of my dad took me up to school to see Mr bretherton ..finlay was in the office my dad said yep punish her I got a couple of cracks haha .. .x’

I’m guessing that this punishment was the cane across the hand.

I fear I may have misrepresented Cathy’s caning being on the bare bottom. She actually stated:

‘I went to a barbaric catholic Private School formerly on St Annes Rd East called St Gabriels prep School. Run by Cross and Passion (lol) nuns. Forced us to eat dinners that were disgraceful and I was give 6 of the best on my backside at 6 years old for drawing on my desk. The girl next to me squealed. I was horrendously bruised. That would be GBH today.’

I don’t know why I jumped to the wrong conclusion, nevertheless this was a still a very harsh punishment, especially for a 6 year old.

In reference to Ribbleton Hall, it does indeed seem there was no particular Modus Operandi.  It would be nice to see what the LEA Policy was for the period of interest.

Regarding the hairbrush punishments at Walton Le Dale.  Linda recalled:

‘we used to get our ass slapped from Miss Ovenden For wareing our mini skirts one inch Above the 6 inch rule above from our knee She would bloody measure it And we was sent to her office We was whacked with her bloody hair brush Its the 60s for god sake The year of the mini skirt Lol’

This was supported by Jayne who responded with:

‘What about the RE/head women teacher who gave you the brush on your backside, Miss Ovenden  ?’

I’ve no idea if these were over-the-knee style spankings.  My gut feeling is that I doubt it.  There is also evidence that Miss Ovendon used the hairbrush on other parts of the anatomy as Greta remembered:

‘Miss Ovenden Senior mistress whacked me with a hairbrush across the back of my hand for answering back.’

Stujos you further mention the infamous Helston spankings, I’ll digress a little here.  I recently infiltrated a group for former pupils of Helston Grammar School and came across this interesting post by an admin on April 10^th of this year:

‘A post about a previous headmaster who brought scandal to the school has been brought to my attention and I have decided to delete it. I appreciate that the person who posted it thought it would be a subject of mutual interest and that we should be able to talk about school memories, warts and all, but I have no wish to glorify this particular subject, especially as it may stir up painful memories for some people. Please can we consider other members feelings when we post.’

Unfortunately, I never saw this post.  However, some members were not happy with the moderation and a Gentleman named Edward posted the following response:

‘It’s not glorifying what happened, it’s an historical fact. In not mentioning these things it would appear to be glorifying the school and in looking back it wasn’t all good.
It’s due to not being spoken about that abuse is maintained.
It was due to the bravery of those two girls who stepped forward that it was stopped, it should never be forgotten as it encouraged others to come forward thus alerting parents to the peril their daughters faced at school/s resulting in the ban on such punishment albeit ten years later.
It’s for these reasons that I think your judgement in deleting the post is erroneous and only serves to protect those who continue such actions.’

I think Edward make a really strong point here and I echo his sentiments entirely.

Hopefully by the time I get around to posting some accounts from the South West region some fresh discussion will have surfaced.

Finally, and back on topic. In reference to the school camp slipperings at Walshaw, these were the only accounts SCP administer to females that I could find.  No great details other than they both took place at Hestbank Holiday Camp in Morecambe.

Patricia remembered:

‘It was a long building with two dormitories each with two row.s of bed.s in about twenty five bed.s in each. Teacher.s in middle bit. So they could hear us all. We got slipper most nights ha. Was at Hest bank Morecambe . Fun days x’

Whilst Jude simple recalled:

‘Anyone remember the trip to Hestbank? (class of 69/70), that was an experience, I did not! like being away from home, or the ‘plimsoll’ punishment for smoking in the Loos’

These just sound like classic cases of loco parentis with the punishments being socially acceptable for the time period.

A decade or so later, I remember my first school camp at Farndale in the North Yorkshire Moors.  Nobody received any SCP but I did get mooned at by one of the prettiest girls in the school.

And a big thank you for digressing into the activities of Mr Guise.  Your superb under cover research is, I think , irrefutable evidence that the reported Helston  incident was far from a one off. Edward’s  comments are a bit vague as he may possibly be speaking of school girls generally and not only Helston pupils but the moderator’s comment that his reason for deleting was to avoid stirring up painful memories of others is pretty conclusive.

Regarding the camp slipperings . “We got the slipper most nights”, presumably over nightwear. This  sounds a familiar scenario,  as does the description of the dorms, In my day the girls were in one bit with boys in another with the 2 teachers having the bit in between.,   One assumes  the punishment was carried out by a same sex teacher but this was definitely not always the case.

Intrigued, I Researcher, by your record of the use of a T-Square to inflict CP. In my school the use of such an implement was, understandably, restricted to the head teacher in technical subjects who had one to hand. Alas in the 1960’s there were no girls in our technical classes. It would seem that Ribbleton Hall had a more modern attitude. I can’t imagine any other teacher having ready access to a T-Square.

My class teacher in my last year at junior school used the wooden Tee square on boys. He did it on the more naughty boys in class. They had  to bend over his table at the front for what was usually three firm whacks. It was a mixed class so girls saw it done. If girls misbehaved which was unusual they’d be sent to the senior lady teacher. She slapped their legs.
I was a bit of swot in junior school but was kept back after school one afternoon. I was class monitor and  liked the teacher a lot. When the rest had gone he gave me a telling off, ‘getting too big for my boots’ he called it. Then to my horror he unhooked the Tee square from the black board. I’d seen him use it plenty of times before so knew what to do when he said to bend over. He gave me three whacks. It stung but wasn’t that terrible. I’d never been whacked in school before but was sometimes spanked at home. I continued to be his class monitor but tried not to show off there again.

SOTB: Amazed that a non-technical teacher elected to use such an implement. I wonder why he chose to keep one to hand. I cannot think of any reasonable explanation.
