The TV Grange Hill caning of Cathy seems accurate enough. Mrs. McClusky was driven into doing it. I doubt she thought that Cathy’s mother would agree to it. Obviously caning wasn’t unheard of there. That cane must have been used on numerous hands and perhaps bottoms too.
Cathy seemed to know what to do. However two strokes on presumably her non writing hand seems odd, two stroke hand canings were usually one on each hand? Grange Hill was supposedly in London where bottom caning of girls was not permitted by then.  All a TV programme of course and was made in the late 1970s.

Hi, 6otB.  I agree that Cathy’s demeanor when about to be caned made me think that caning was at least not unheard of in Grange Hill,  and that she did know (or think she knew) what she had to do.  However, I seem to remember (*) that she held her hand out in the wrong position, and Mrs McClusky had to reposition it, which made me assume that she hadn’t been caned herself before.  She also made quite a fuss afterwards clutching her hand in pain.

(*) I am not claiming to recall detail of a kids’ TV programme from the 1970s – I’ve watched the clip more recently on YouTube!

Please forgive me folks, I get into trouble for this regularly in RL!   But we can assume absolutely nothing of any consequence about anything that happened in Grange Hill.  It was a fictional drama, the participants were actors following a script.  One of the problems we have in society today is that TV is so omnipresent and pervasive that half the population can’t tell fiction from reality.  I’m sure that doesn’t apply to anyone here, but just in case …………

Yes, some people almost live in TV programmes. This is particularly so with older folk. I remember my mother-in-law in later life being prone to this. We bought her a new large screen TV she began to be confused with programmes and real life.
If a film becomes scary just remember that there is a full camera, sound and lighting crew there all the time.

There are a lot more cases out there in the north west, with fresh information coming in all the time.  However, it is time to move onto another region.

I started this project 18 months ago and have now completed 5 regions, with 4 regions to go plus Northern Ireland & Wales, I’m probably half-way there.
