I agree with Dennis 2. Slippering and caning was a usual punishment at my school but with one possible exception was done for purely disciplinary purposes and generally was fair and not used excessively.

The male teacher at Breeze Hill who employed a wooden fish on  the bottom of Saleema   and probably also on Heidi and others  sounds quite inventive!

It was interesting that there seemed to be a strong inference that the bottom was the principle target for several schools namely Brookway , Ellesmere Park , Deane Grammar and Eccles C of E with the latter having a teacher who apparently had no qualms about complete uncovering the target area. If you have any further details these would be most appreciated.

Regarding Breeze Hill Secondary in Oldham, according to former pupils the woodwork teacher Mr Brian Lord (who later became a councillor – easily googled) regular applied CP to boys and occasionally girls.  There are multiple references to the wooden fish being his preferred implement.  So far, I have been unable to find an actual description of it.  However, one former pupil claims to have made it in woodwork.  There are also references to him using a slipper, unsurprisingly the generally consensus within the group implies he was not a popular teacher.

Within the group there are also a couple of pages from a Punishment book covering part of 1963 and 1978.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t state the implement, however by reading the comments it appears that the most common implements were the strap and slipper.  The punishment book further shows that in most cases boys were punished on the seat, whilst girls were punished across their hands.  Interestingly, it appears that there was no real change to the  punishment regime despite the 15 year time jump.  I will upload these extracts date if anyone is interested.

I’m also doing a little more research into Brookway High, Deane Grammar, Eccles C of E and Ellesmere Park Secondary, I’ll post the more detailed accounts along with any further findings shortly.

I grew in the 50s/60s and attended a local boys grammar school form 1957 to 1966 inc. sixth form. There were a few teachers like the above mentioned Mr. Brian Lord who used SCP on a frequent basis. One, a French teacher, used various implements. He ran weekly vocab tests with a pass mark of 15 out of 20. The tests were set as homework with the actual test next day. For each wrong answer under 15 every boy in the class received a firm whack across the seat of their trousers. I was a regular offender sometimes taking 3 or 4 whacks. It was rare for one of his lessons not having a few boys bending over his desk!

That said the great majority of teachers in the same school used very little or no SCP. The headmaster and deputy head gave formal canings for ‘serious’ misbehaviour or regularly missing school detentions. Classroom canings were virtually unknown but a plimsoll or ruler was used there. I only saw the cane used there a few times. A metalwork teacher did once cane a second year boy (12/13 years old). The teacher, an older man, gave him 3 hard strokes in front of the class for a dangerous stupid prank with a piece of warm metal that touched another lad. The teacher first applied a sticking plaster but no real damage done. Then he caned the boy who was a big lad and a bit of a bully.  I saw the marks from it in the changing rooms/showers a day or so afterwards.

I think the rest of of the class thought it was well deserved. It also reminded us all of the consequences of serious misbehaviour. The school became mixed soon after I left, 1970ish. I have often wondered if SCP was still used there afterwards.

Back then I knew virtual nothing of girls receiving SCP. Most senior schools in the city I grew up in were single sex establishments.

Thank you for responding.  The use of non standard implements intrigues me. As there are probably rules as what should be used It shows that the teacher involved probably also has maverick tendencies and are often ones of interest to this forum. Although I am able to confirm this is not always the case; I was whacked by a yardstick ( it actually broke after the 3rd whack…details have been previously related) by very popular woodwork teacher who actually very rarely used CP,

The application of the strap and cane to  hand and bottom for girls and boys respectively is I think pretty much the norm although I personally believe this was not necessarily when the slipper was used.  The inference is that Mr  Lord had no qualms about such usage.  I also note that Lynn reports being a recipient although this may well have been before Mr Lord’s time at the school.

I feel obliged to mention that the lack of response to your post to date by  other contributors is  slightly  disappointing but I suspect that many will be waiting for your data for other schools before responding.

Good to see another response to I, Researcher’s fine work. One thing I’d like to see there is if the records are from girls only or mixed schools. Were girls given SCP more in girls only schools more than in mixed ones?

During my investigations I’ve encountered many accounts of unconventional implements being utilized. Heavy books (I’m not sure how effective that could have been), spoons, spatulas, hairbrushes, cricket bats, table tennis bats and an array of home-made weaponry including this wooden fish.  I imagine it to have been something a little like one of these, which depending on dimensions is not too dissimilar from US Paddle.

Anyway, as promised, here is a bit more information in reference to Brookway High:

I find this one of interest as it appears that the headmistress applied CP (albeit in a minor form) right up to and possible even after the ban.  Here Victoria (born around 1976) stated:

‘I still have her hand prints on my arse after she slapped it in 1988!’

As we all know 1988 is post ban in state funded school consquently, I initially wondered if it were a private school?  However, it appears not so.  There is also a possibility that Victoria got her dates wrong, even if this is the case there is enough evidence in the group that SCP was at least used right up the ban.

The headmistress was Miss Winifred Blackburn who received an OBE in the Queen’s 1968 Birthday Honours.  I’ve not seen any photos of Miss Blackburn, however she is described as a very tall lady with huge hands with one former pupil stating she resembled Olive Oil from Popeye.  Within the group there are further accounts of her spanking both boys and girls in public.  This is evidenced by Neil who recalled:

‘Yeah I remember getting my arse clipped by her’

And Kate who replies with:

‘I remember she used to get people in assembly and smack their arses. Her hands were huge too! Poor you..’

This is further supported by Vicky who remembers her:

‘Lurking in the corridors to find naughty ones sent to stand outside….. then stand you at front of class, remove her rings and smack your ass for all to see! (luckily she never caught me! Lol) Scary Scary lady!’

Lisa also recalls Miss Blackburn’s modus operandi:

‘Wasn’t it about 8 thin brackets she would slowly take off and place in the kids hand to hold for her while she slapped your arse about 10 times in front of the class’

Unfortunately, I’ve been able to ascertain the ages of Neil, Kate, Vicky & Lisa, consequently I don’t know the potential years they were at the school.  I’d would estimate all their ages to somewhere between 48 and 55.  I therefore conclude that Brookway was amongst the small number of schools that utilized CP right up to and possibly (and illegally) even after the ban.
