The paddle seems to be very much the preferred implement in USA schools. When did it first come into widespread use? I am particularly interested in early mentions of the school paddle in dated factual or fictional literature, and in official documents.

Have other cultures used the paddle in schools?

American Way (in another thread):

Teacher colleges often had societies that involved paddles

Please, AW, can you provide hyperlinks to any such?

I have pondered above whether graduate teachers might have brought fraternity paddles with them when they took up school teaching but have found no evidence on the matter.

1950 Lorain Ohio. Lorain is about 30 miles west of Cleveland.

The day when teachers fashioned their own custom-built weapons of discipline is a thing of the past. A teacher with faulty aim may be suspended by the school board. To insure the right technique is used, the rules require that two other members of the school witness the paddling. The regulation will prevent a teacher from wiping away the sting of a paper wad with one hand while reaching for his paddle with the other.

American Way,

No need to apologise. It is better to double up rather than overlook important items. I hope you do not mind if I crosslink related items. Please keep posting.

The Good Old TimesWhen this old hat was new,
The railroad was a stage,
And a six mule team made plenty of steam
For the broadest kind of gauge.

You caught a goose when you wanted a pen,
The ink we used was blue,
And the women we loved didnt want to be men,
When this old hat was new.

A spade was only a spade
And Jennie was just plain Jane.
For his impudent lip a boy would skip
At the end of a rattan cane.

There were sixteen ounces in every pound,
Four quarts made a gallon true;
But things dont seem like the used to be
When this old hat was new.

But we have shortened the time since then,
And were running a faster heat,
And the boys of ten are full blown men,
Who run the store and the street.

We blush to giggle, and we should smile;
And were cute and never say die;
We’re up to snuff, and were full of guile,
And were just too awfully fly.

And father is governor, old man, dad,
And his old day is gone;
We fun things fast, and a little bad,
Since we put this new hat on.

R. J. Burdette.

The following item is a gap filler, a snippet of “news” used to fill a gap on the page. Its reliability is uncertain as is the date. However, it does suggest than some paddle-wielding teachers might have experienced the paddle at college.
