The paddle seems to be very much the preferred implement in USA schools. When did it first come into widespread use? I am particularly interested in early mentions of the school paddle in dated factual or fictional literature, and in official documents.Have other cultures used the paddle in schools?
The reasons for the widespread adoption of the paddle in schools in the USA remains uncertain. No explanations by the earlier adopters have been found. I am hoping some late adopters will have explained their concerns. So far, no luck.

Spankings in Schools Get Board Okay
WOODSIDE. Calif. (UPI) – Trustees of the Portola Valley School District have approved spanking with a “light broad paddle” as a disciplinary measure for some students. However, the decision, scheduled for ratification at the school board’s next regular meeting, set forth certain limitations to the means and extent of corporal punishment. The trustees said the spankings mast be administered by the principal in the presence of a “certified witness,” and only after permission is obtained from the parents.

This would be an example of a light broad paddle. Who knows? Why not lexan? Some day due to debbie112 advocacy the anti-bruising paddle will become de rigueur for family, school and other recreational purposes.

Hi American Way,
Broad light paddles like the one in the famous archive picture do no favors to the ‘history of the paddle’ . Ping pong type paddles often made of balsa one ply are fine if you are going to use them in elementary, (which I wouldn’t), but in High School if you dont like lexan the real choice is 1/2-3/8 inch hardwood such as Ash, oak, mahogany, hickory etc. I wouldn’t use pine. It is lighter and splits without warning as it dries out in the school environment.
As for that skirt, well you see why I retain the option of asking a student to attend in gym kit.
The whole paddling is badly posed. I would want her
A) out of that skirt which looks like it will absorb too much of the lick
B) properly bending over
C) clearly sticking the target out , so i can easily paddle the sit spot.
It reminds me of a comment I once read in a newspaper advice column when I was a teenager. It was words to the effect of ‘the miniskirt despite its negative social attributes has one positive virtue. A girl wearing one is self prepared for a good paddling when necessary!.

Probably very loosely based on history as understood at time of writing.

<div style=”width:100%;background-image:url(“/realm/A_L_123/A_L_trg.gif”);”>Hello KK,
Absolutely no question of grandmothers and eggs as I am certain that a man of your research capabilities will not have overlooked the fact that ‘The Hotspur’ was part of the D.C. Thompson & Co publishing empire based in Dundee, Scotland (famous for Jam, Jute and Journalism) and in 1933 Dundee if you got whacked by a school teacher it was usually with a tawse.
The Hotspur was a great publication and, together with ‘The Wizard’ from the same publishing stable, the juvenile Another_Lurker was an avid reader thereof in the early 1950s. They were story papers and he liked lots of text and wasn’t overly keen on comics, apart from ‘The Eagle’ which had wonderful ‘how it works’ diagrams. However it has to be said that any coincidence between historical accuracy and stories in ‘The Hopspur’ and ‘The Wizard’ was probably entirely accidental. For authoritative and accurate stuff we had The Children’s Newspaper.
Ah me, recollections of a misspent youth! If I hadn’t spent all that time reading the above, together with the contents of the parental book shelves and anything else I could lay my hands on I might have got into trouble more at school, been whacked regularly like normal kids and been equipped to be an authoritative contributor to this estimable Forum. </div>

EAL,
I am pleased that you were not tempted to liken me to a grandmother (= an old women).
Yes, indeed the Hotspur story is a warning to all writers of fiction, including those who frequent this forum. If you write for the lowest common denominator, that is the reader with least knowledge or understanding of the world, you may come across as a naïve and incompetent author. Of course, if you are ignorant and incompetent you are unlikely to know this and risk being disbelieved or even ridiculed. My impression is that Hotspur did not aspire to quality.

As previously mentioned (October 2014) paddle punishment was not unknown in England.
Bounder = An ill-bred, unscrupulous man; a cad; a morally reprehensible person.
[. . .]
Still resisting gamely, the Bounder was held on the box, face down. He wriggled and struggled and panted. Bob Cherry wielded the fives bat.
“Six!” said Lord Mauleverer.
Whack whack, whack, whack, whack, whack!
They came down hard and fast. Bob had a heavy hand with a fives bat. Every whack was followed by a roar from the wriggling Bounder. Then he was released, and he bounded to his feet, clenching his hands, and panting with rage.

COLONIAL SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES IN NEW YORK
THOMAS E. FINEGAN, LL.D., DEPUTY COMMISSIONED OF EDUCATION, ALBANY
New York was settled by the Dutch during the first half of the seventeenth century. A great struggle for liberty had shaken Europe during the preceding century and the burden of that struggle had fallen upon the people of the Netherlands. The Calvinists ruled the country and the founders of New Netherland were adherents of the Calvinistic party. A fundamental principle of the democracy of Calvinism from the beginning of the teaching of that doctrine was that each individual should be able to read. [. . .]
[. . .]
Discipline was severe and punishment was inflicted for slight offenses. The chief instruments of torture were those used in Holland and, unfortunately for the Dutch boys in America, brought to this country with the other essential equipment of a school. These were a heavy wooden stick shaped like a paddle, called a plak, and the renowned switch, as celebrated and necessary in public schools throughout the civilized world as the master himself, and which was called the roede.
[. . .]

I am guessing the plak was used to club the palms of the hands.

KK. Thanks for an exhaustive source list.Colored girls were lashed and paddled decades after slavery in court. Here are two examples. While I’m sure some white girls may have found themselves in this situation the record shows otherwise.

PUBLICLY SPANKED
Three Colored Girls Whipped Order of Judge Whitaker ByLizzie Moore, Fanny Washington and Kate Bower, a trio of colored girls, whose ages range from fifteen to seventeen years, were arrested Friday night for street walking and general misconduct. One of their favorite amusements was butting
into and jostling ladies off the sidewalks and street crossings. In meting punishment to the culprits, Judge Whitaker pursued a mere effective and salutary way than the old method of sending them to Jail. He sent for the mothers of the wayward girls, and after explaining the nature of the offense and the penalty attached thereto, he gave them the choice of spanking their daughters in the presence of an officer, whose duty it was to see that it was well done; otherwise, the severest penalty of the law would be inflicted. They agreed to do the spanking. The mothers and offenders retired to a roomin rear of the Police Courtroom, and each one in turn was placed across a table and an improvised paddle made from a salt barrel stave was wielded by the parent in a manner that left a deep impression en both mind and bodythat will remain for several days to come.Though severe, it is quite likely that the warm application will have a beneficial effect. They now take their meals standing.http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/ … /seq-4.pdf
The St. Louis Republic., July 19, 1901 Kansas City, Mo.
A negro girl was publicly whipped in the court of aKansas City Justice of the Peace this morning.Little Thomas, 13 years old, was foundguilty of stealing a small amount of moneyfrom a. neighbor. When Justice Walls prepared to sentence her, the mother beggedthe Court to order her sent to his whippingpost, urging that the result would be better. This whipping post in Walls’s court ls famous as a local institution, but until nowno woman has ever been bound to it. At the request of the mother. Justice Walls consented to let the girl go, provided the mother administered a sound lashing. The girl was bound, and the mother, armed with a whip, thrashed her until the Judge ordered her to desist.
KK sorry for not catching the paddling of the three colored girls under your magisterial thread. Let there be peace in the valley. American Way
