Once inside home I burst into tears in my mum’s arms. I could barely tell her what had happened and when I did manage to sob my way through the story she was really good about it and gave me lots of hugs, gentle motherly kisses and reassuring words.
“Maybe it was too soon for a date my dear,” she said. “Go and get yourself changed before dad comes back and take off your messed up make-up so he won’t see that. I think maybe we are running before we can walk.”
