I grabbed a magazine and a rug and whispered to mum that I just had to hide for a few minutes – she understood – then I went and sat down on the far side of the car, hoping he would soon pass by. My heart thumped wildly and I thought it was going to burst out of my chest.
Five minutes later mum came round the back of the car and said he had gone. “He walked straight past and didn’t recognise me,” she said. “So you can get up now and join me and your dad with the food. I just hope dad doesn’t want you to go for a walk around the lake with him later on.”
