I visited a school museum while I was in London – the Ragged School Museum – and saw such a display there with a class of children.

Here in Victoria (the state) we have a very nice historical recreation called Sovereign Hill which seeks to reproduce the goldfields of the 1850s. It contains four schools currently – representing a ‘National’ school (the forerunners of government schools), a parochial school, an orphans school and a rudimentary diggings school. It’s very common for school groups to take classes to spend two days at one of these schools experiencing school life in the 1850s. They always make a great display of the cane.
