With a run up the cane is unlikely to land flat striking both buttocks. With a run up the tip of the cane is more likely to land first, and so take the sting out of the rest of the cane that may land, albeit fairly softly on the bottom. The tip, by which I mean THE FIRST 3 INCHES is the part that when it does not land flat cuts into the buttocks leaving them very sore and grazed. The type of punishment, which if parents saw the mark would complain to the school. One can always tell when the cane has landed tip first as the far buttock is badly marked and the one nearest the caner hardly marked., This is not what the caner wanted.
