With resolve that astonished me I boldly stepped forward to the desk and bent over it. “How m-many, Ma’am,” I asked bravely. The assistant headmistress seemed delighted by my courage, walking quickly around the desk to stare at me from behind. I flushed and bravely held position. “The standard punishment for a first offense is three strokes,” she said mildly, “but you are a very naughty boy, are you not? Don’t you think I should whip this bum much longer?”
