Now to turn to my philosophy of education. Let’s start with belief..I don’t believe that school kids are exactly ( hopefully) like untrained puppies, but they certainly are not a choir of little angels. To ensure an orderly and effective education ( yes that’s actually what a school is there for) ( duco to lead, hence educo to educate …….) Leadership involves setting or ‘enacting’ general principles and rules for the benefit of all, just as we must have laws for a just and ordered society. If you have rules, there are , what my mentor in school would have called red lines. If you cross them there are penalties. , because we must be fair and we must have order so that the function of the school continues..I don’t believe it is possible to have a school which effectively fulfils its function of education not just knowledge, but social education, learning how to act to one another and in the world at large…….without rules, and you can’t have rules if there is no sanction for breaking them. It is a non sequitur. .
