When I was at school I tended to be a bit hyperactive. Sitting in a hot airless room on a Saturday morning for three hours was the worst punishment I could think of. . I avoided it mostly, but got it once, for example, for failing a test. Hands up! I was just lazy, it was ‘didn’t’ not ‘couldn’t’. As it was my deputy head who gave me the detention, I asked her to think about commuting it to the cane. After all skipping detention was an automatic two-stroke, so why not have that now, and get it done with? She said she sympathized, and, in my case, it might do no harm , I admitted I was lazy and my record showed that I could sail through the work……BUT you see it was the slippery slope. Do it for this, for me, and then others come, and the line between can’;t and won’t is difficult to draw.
