Now many clinical psychologists use sex as a ‘natural’ division which is ‘worth’ exploring . If most girls exhibit ‘A’ and most boys ‘B’ then it appropriate to override a normal presumption of equality. They argue this empirically , rejecting further differentiation on the grounds that it is Utopian, but as I have made clear elsewhere I reject this as an inappropriate model of demonstration in social sciences.
They may of course wish to argue they are in clinical science. that argument falls well outside the scope of this debate . There cannot be a non ideological substrate in a subject which by its very materiality is defined by the ideological space of the social milieu. In my mind Freud shows us categorically that in clinical practice ideas ….disappear ….to be replaced by practices and rituals within an ideological space, whilst the subject, consciousness belief systems and concrete actions survive.
