Recognition that punishment of any sort remains private and is NOT shared with other pupils.
Vital but not easily achieved . many punishments by their nature an re very public….detention ISS ………and their is still a feeling by some professionals that justice should be exemplary.
Actually some punishments can be counterproductive. In detention ‘en mass’ you often concentrate a number of difficult students of differing psychological types , and hot house them together in one physical area. If a few ‘good students are sprinkled in, you have both the conditions for contagion , and for concentrated disruption.The same is true of ‘coolers’ Iss etc . this is the similar problem amongst remand prisoners of contagion , and in addition the concentration of difficult individuals in one place means you need experienced staff who sometimes react inappropriately towards occasional offenders.
