To put this item into its correct context, there was an item on tonight’s BBC1 program ‘The One Show’ in which the issue mentioned above was raised. In the interests of reporting accuracy, one of the presenters, Adrian Chiles, was seen to be given six strokes of the cane. A discussion followed, during which schoolchildren were asked their opinion about bringing back corporal punishment. Some of the class agreed with the idea, and a headmaster who was ‘on the sofa’ freely admitted to having used the cane in school when it was legal to do so.
The programme generally takes a light-hearted look at life, and I don’t believe anyone took it too seriously. The question of the return of school corporal punishment raises its head from time to time, no doubt encouraged by those with an agenda.
I don’t think anyone (apart from the fantasists on this forum)would expect corporal punishment to return to our schools.
