At the boarding school, I went to canings, while extremely severe, were never that frequently don’t know,2/3 a week maybe-and the Headmaster didn’t hold back with a caning, he caned so hard in fact that very, very rarely did a boy need another during his whole time at the school.

The school library had a door at one end that led directly into the head study over which was draped a large heavy green curtain the idea of this being I suppose was to help block out the sound of a caning but, then again more than likely hung there solely as a draught excluder, but of course, boys like to think the worst.

However, and since every boy relishes hearing another boy receiving a good caning and on the occasion when we knew a boy was ‘up for we would crowd around the library door, heads beneath the curtain listening to the agonizing screaming and crying as the boy within was taking his caning’badly’and I’m sure that the Headmaster knew this but said nothing for what better deterrent could there possibly be?
