Such canings would leave the boys bottom tender for at least two days and the bruises took over a couple of weeks to completely fade but were not tender after about the third day. On pants or bare a thinner more flexible cane was used. this bent on impact and did not bruise so much. It stung more on landing but did not numb the bottom so the full effects were felt seconds after it landed.It did leave swollen red weal lines on the bottom but these tended only to be painful for a few hours.
