Most boys could not feel the effect of the caning the next day and in most cases the marks had vanished within 10 days. The other point is, that if the cane was used on a boys bare bottom, it is more likely that he would not use the cane so hard as he would see the marks it left, and human nature would make him not hit with excessive force. After all the idea was to cause short sharp pain, not discomfort that lasted for days
