In conversation with others, I found that this sort of role for girls occurred elsewhere and sometimes extended into high school. One of my young secretaries, many years ago, told me she used to be an informer and got many boys caned. It seems her high school – not elite by any means -was troubled by male boisterousness outside class times and to beat it they had trusted girls, like her, inform on their exploits when not under the pedagogical eye.
