In many ways, the tradition about not dobbing isn’t a bad one in terms of forming communities among boys and teaching them a degree of self reliance – but taken too far, it can be disastrous so we’ve decided to try and temper it in some cases. With senior boys, there’s also a reasonable understanding that if somebody like myself or their form master, or Matron, or a counsellor says we have to know something, we’re deadly serious and not messing around. And I think most of them trust us enough to deliver what we ask in such cases – they know I’m not going to play that card because a boy is wagging – I’m playing it because I (for example) believe the boy is suicidal.
