Canings by the prefects were fairly common. It was a bend over, touch your toes process, and up to three strokes. No run up though, as portrayed in a film whose name escapes me, and certainly no bare bottom involved as per Doctor Dominum’s reference to Malcolm Frazer. There was an appeal process involving the Headmaster, described in the link I’ll give below, and for that reason canings were administered in the prefects’ room at least 24 hours after the prefects’ court appearance, usually during a break period. I don’t recall how the prefect to carry out the sentence was selected, probably they just made a selection from whoever happened to be in the prefects’ room at the time. Nor do I recall if there had to be a quorum of prefects present as witnesses.
