In comics like “The Beano” and TV shows like “Whack-O”, is was common to see a group of boys in a row, all bending over and being caned or waiting to be caned. (At one time, the masthead at the top of the page showed “The Bash Street Kids” in this position, with the letters of the strip’s title printed on their buttocks!) Did anything like this ever happen in real life? I assume it would be physically impossible to cane three pairs of buttocks at once, however long the cane was, so what did teachers really do? Give the first boy in the row his six whacks, and then move on to the next bottom; or work along the row giving one whack to each victim, and repeat the whole process six times?
