HEAD ACCUSED OF WOUNDING PUPIL
FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
ANDOVER, JAN. 5
Accusations of excessive violence to pupils at a private school near Andover, Hampshire, were made at an occasional court at Andover today when William Michael Byrd, aged 38, headmaster of Cholderton College, was charged with wounding a boy aged 15 and assaulting two boys aged 16, causing them actual bodily harm. He was remanded in custody until tomorrow.
Mr J.V. Bates, for the prosecution, said Byrd and his wife had operated Cholderton College as proprietors and he as a headmaster since 1958, but for some little time there had been “disquiet” about the way in which this school has been conducted. This crystallized in October, when a complaint was made to the police.
