Asked if she thought using physical violence was a proper method of dealing with maladjusted children, she said she thought some children needed corporal punishment.

Mrs. Byrd agreed that by that she meant maladjusted children.

When Mr. Polson asked her is, as a person qualified in child health and psychology, she approved of boys being stripped and beaten with a swagger stick, she replied: “I can see certain circumstances where it might be necessary.” Such circumstance would include searching for something hidden like cigarettes or possibly drugs.

Intervening, Mr. Justice Donaldson said he could understand the case for searching a boy for drugs and the need to strip him but he could understand why it was necessary to administer the corporal punishment while he was stripped.
